the state and federal governments are looking at raising gas taxes because people are driving less. they want the money to build more roads. but if people are driving less, do we need more roads.?

It boils down to the fact that our government has gotten WAY too big.
The government's philosophy is that ALL money belongs to them. They will take it in any way that they can, be it gas tax, income tax, death tax...
He*l, i'm waiting for the TAX tax, where they tax you on all of the taxes that you pay. That will be the end of our civilization as we know it.

we already pay that the first is tax on income thean the dollars left over are taxed by sales tax, then what you buy is taxed by way of property tax.

not to worry, if people drive even less, the boated Government will put a GPS unit in all vehicles and tax you on how many miles you drive. So not only will you be taxed on the amount of gas you use, but on how many miles you drive.
Trucking and service companies will be the ones to take the burden on.
At some point, the people of this country better wake up. We are very rapidly going from a government of the people, to a people with a government. One day we are going to wake up and the name of the country is going to be
"The United Socialist States of North America":mad:

Better get used to higher taxes from all sorts of directions. With the costs that the Bush administration incurred being followed up by our new Socialist thinking president, we the people are about to get collectively screwed.

Well, they won't get it through income tax. There won't be any income. I guess that's why they are taxing goods. But that won't last long either.
Oh, yeah. We're on our way out.

I find it interesting that the Gov't seems to think it's a great idea to raise taxes during an economic downturn. Why would they think this is even remotely appropriate especially when everyone is making less &/or out of a job?
Sometimes I wonder if we would be better off without gov't.

The same rationale used by credit card companies that just raised my 11.99% interest rates to 29.99%. I will now be paying off my approximate 17K of outstanding credit and will pay as I play to avoid finance charges that I was willing to carry over at 11.99%.
The other side of this coin is that folks who were paying only the minimum each much may not be able to pay even that and those cards will go into default.
These new math geniuses just don't get long term investment practices.

Government is rarely ever for the people, & if any Gov't. starts out that way it only takes a few generations for it to change. I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said that Gov't. was a necessary evil & I tend to agree with his assessment.
All I know is that it seems to me that 530+ people have lost sight of the fact that they are elected to Washington to serve, not to be served, & they can't help but keep voting themselves pay raises every session. We've always been told that you get what you pay for.... Well, if this were so then we should have the best Gov't. & the best politicians in the world. Judge for yourselves: Is this so? I don't think it is. I think instead we're paying for a bunch of thugs to systematically & thoroughly destroy every single value we used to hold dear.
