View Full Version : pressure relief valve opens

I have a gas boiler with steam radiators. My boiler pressure keeps going up to 5 psi and the pressure relief valve opens. I adjusted the pressuretrol (0.5 psi with differential 2 psi) but cannot solve the problem. The burners seem to stay on even though the pressure in the boiler has passed the cut out setting. I am wondering whether this happens due to pressure relief valve, pressuretrol, or other sensing components. Recently some erosions in returning pipes have been fixed by breaking a joint and replacing smaller size pipe (from 2 inches to 1 1/4 inches) in some part.
Thanks.

You really might want to consider a service call.....

Steam systems are too difficult for most hvac techs, definitely not for the novice.............Also they can be extremely volatile..........call a service company, make sure they work on steam heat.................

relief valves on steam boilers pop at 15 psig. You need a service tech. This is not a DIY problem. Steam burns skin rapidly, don't mess with this. get a tech who is proficient at steam before something ruptures and you get hurt or killed.
And don't get the guy who replaced the pipes with smaller pipes.

So true! Unlike most HVAC which IS like rocket science, steam hydronics AREN'T, they're more like voodoo. YUM YUM eat umup stuff, sorry for that! It really takes someone with experience to work on steam, especially if one of the DEAD MEN set it up. Time for professional help, Lord knows we all need it from time to time.
