I usewd to see gas ranges with a side heater of the kind I think you are describing. They were a lot older than thirty years, though. I'd say they were from the 1950s or earlier.
Ranges tend to adapt slowly, with models retaining features from older styles of range for decades. Thus old wood and coal cookstoves provided heat for the kitchen and perhaps the house. When you wanted to sell someone on a gas range, you needed equipment that supplied heat as well.
When I encountered those old ranges in my years with the local gas utility, I always thought they were kind of keen. Also because they tended to replace wood and coal ranges, my recollection is that they were usually vented into the same chimney that the old coal and wood stove used to use.
My recollection was that the heater portion wasn't thermostatically controlled, but off/on and allowing the flame size to be controlled, similar to a range burner. If that's the case, you might be able to adapt another valve to control the heater.
There are also quite a number of outfits that restore old ranges and provide parts for old equipment. That would probably be a likely source of a replacement part for you range as well.

Try TOAC, The Old Apliance Club. Thats where I get parts for stoves I restore. If they don'y have the valve, chances are they can rebuild it for you. Send them an e-mail with a picture of your valve. See if they can help.

The BJLRA was a combination gas cock and thermostat designed for use on combination ranges in which a section of the range was used for room heating. Temperature range on the dial was Lo-Med-Hi which corresponds to the bulb temperatures of 60, 70, & 80 F.
I actually gave away my last working BJLRA a few months ago. I do have some original dials that I get a call for occasionally.
Along with the companies already mentioned there is always REPCO to rebuild the original.
The last guy I talked to about BJLRA had taken a stock BJ control (4350-034) which is designed for a steam table application (100-200 F) and used it in place of the BJLRA. He said he turned the calibration down on the low end to be approx 75 degrees and just leaves it on low.
Let me know if you want a copy of the original BJLRA instruction sheet. I can e-mail it to you.
