The above system with variable speed air handler and 20k aux heat has been installed for amost a year in my new home.It is a 4 ton.
I never did think it was working the way it should. Finally , a more knowledgable tech came out as I wanted to make sure Comfort R was turned on.

My heat pump always seemed to run in 1st stage only and then go to aux heat instead of going to 2nd stage and then aux heat.
He checked my pressures and went in air handler and said my dip switches were incorrect. He reset them and still no second stage but air handler run with less speed and adjusted air flow now.He then checked thermostat and he changed from 2 heat 2 cool to : 3 heat 2 cool and heat pump will now go into second stage before aux heat.

I can hear the thermostat click now when going to 2nd stage. Also , my air flow is lower but seems better as there is hardley any noise. Will the air handler adjust air flow if more is needed? It does blow harder during aux heat.
Does this setup sound correct now? It will now heat down in the 20's when before it would ask for aux heat in the low 30's.
I now see what everyone is talking about the comfort of 2 stage heating. It is hard for a homeowner to know if everything is running correct but this forum is a great help.

Now that the dip switches are correct with comfort R feature, your air flow will ramp up from 50% to 80% to 100%. If there is a call on W2 your electric heat it will ramp the fan to 100%

Since your system is a two speed, it is correct to have it set two 3 heat, 2 cool..

Yes.

Knowing the speciifc analytical heat balance point for your residence would likley confirm that this improved operation IS the optimum.
