what do you guys think of the whirlpool energy smart electric water heaters. im putting one in at my house.

Whirlpool has a lot of good products. In my opinion water tanks are not one of them. Standard gas 40 gal has models with reverse threads on pilot controls. Some electric units have control boards that are also hard to come by. Unless you are a plumber with stock and parts available beware what you buy from lowes. Common customer complaint is that they have a warranty but the store will not cover this, they have to call factory and wait for parts sometimes paying for them to ship faster.

I have had way too much bad luck with them.
There are some that have failed less than a month after installation
