I am a supermarket apprentice, i started working with Markets about five months ago and i will never do anything else again. :)
I think more techs are talking about supermarket tech work is because techs are realizing that the hours and pay are in supermarket work. Thats what definatley got me in, i got tired of working the 30-40 hours a week, 40 hours if i was lucky, how can you save money when you barely have enough to pay your bills.

I think it has a bit more to do with job security and stability.
Yes, the hours and pay are nice, but knowing that my job will be there tomorrow is very reassuring in these unsteady times.

You hit the nail on the head....what you are stating is why I have been asking questions about supermarket refrigeration. And as jpsmith said, it certainly is about job security in this day and age.

I think I still qualify. I have 2 Markets, one with a 80 HP rack and old EIL, anohther with some onld hussman super pluss racks with even 3-4 CDA's that still work and I just forund a few new boards for them. I also service a food processing plant with a nice Hill Phoenix R-22 with 2 low temp Carlyle:mad: compressors. I could walk into any market in the world and figure it out still. I was 100% Market service for 10 years before opening my own company, my growth is currenty in residential and light commercial HVAC.

Yeah, really. I drop in from time to time, but time is at a premium lately.
There is a trc at one of our stores, doing nothing. Haven't seen one powered in a long time.

I just checked, and I do have that in .pdf format. It's a decent scan, too.
I think the TRC came after the IPC, but I'm not 100% on that. The TRC (Total Rack Controller) actually had a display, like an RMC, but the IPC (Intelligent Pressure Controller) was only a pressure controller.
Both had remote communication ability, and, at some point in time, the IPC was able to be put into a 485 network with RMCs, TECs, other IPCs, 1602's, etc.
We had TRC's in a store in 1991, for certain. I just found some of my old personal logs and I see where I made mention of a problem with a TRC.
Also, I have, somewhere, a copy of IPCCOM on a 5.25" floppy. (REEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAL useful item, LOL.)
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

Yes, you are correct on that.
I remember now. :o
That was the era when I was trying out the IPC and some early EIL controls...maybe 1985-87. EIL came out with their RC-2000 just prior to CPC releasing the TRC, so the RC-2000 got several test stores at that time. I did one rack for a remodel in Long Island later on with the TRC, but they weren't really up to speed at that point.
So our corporate energy dude sold the big suits on the EIL and they installed it in all 65 stores....$$$...(Finast/Edwards).
I had a good laugh recalling the early communications at 300 baud. That was so slow you could watch the data transfer at the bottom of the screen. :D
So much for my own stroll down the lane, Dave.

It's kinda a funny thing you just reminded me of. I have a good friend, older, who is about to retire after 35 years in the saddle. He sort of mentored me, one of those guys you run into along your way and he brings you up a bit, and I always looked up to him and he's just a great old cat refrigeration guy.
We meet up from time to time and have a few brewskies and some laughs. A few weeks ago we were talking about the CPC and Danfoss stuff. Recently I had some update training on both. And I was in the middle of a project retrofitting an old danfoss early ak 55 system to a new e2.
And he was telling the stories about setting up low pressure controls to run a rack and how in them days commisioning was much more work on a new store.
I never really thought about it I don't guess. That would be a PIA. I have always had the luxuries of the modern age since my time in the seat. I can't even imagine. I wouldn't have the patience.
I have never had the pain to have a controller go down to have to set up a rack on manual. I must be lucky.

that's my new reality, well not the commissioning part but the operation part, had a good one today, a 2003 built Hussmann rack with a mechanical "Paragon" defrost clock!! for all circuits!

I have to say the same myself but as of late I'M going "Back to the Future", on another note In one of our new(take that work lightly) stores there is an old controller(no longer in use but still there) and the date on this thing is March 1978, so i guess thje "modern age" has been around longer than I have been alive! Anyone know what was out there back in the 70's?? I'll have to get some pics!

Hey, we had to install a brand new Kysor rack last year that had a Precision rack timer in it! What a brilliant plan that was, LOL. The chain insisted on it.
What brand is that 1978 controller? Is it a Trend? They were the sh!t in their day.
Margaux, Altech, Andover, (Now TAC~the CURRENT owner of Com-trol) Com-trol also had controllers in the 70s, EIL was around in the late 70s, I can't recall when CPC hit the scene, but I know they were there at the dawn of the 80s, Quest, there were others, too. Funny thing, there's one I had in about 7 stores, whose name I can't remember to save my life right now. I'm pretty sure I've blocked that out of my ind for good, LOL. Seems that the Johnson Encore was out early, too, but I'm not sure if they were around in the 70s...

I started in the mid 80's but we had a lot of these small racks with belt driven V body Dunham-Bush compressors, Flo-con EPR's,and LLSV's controlled by t-stats that I know had to have been there since the early 70's at least. The new racks were coming with IPC's and CDA's but there were also these other controllers that if I remember correctly were made by Alco called an Exactor. It had this little clip you used for checking temps and stuff.
