First, I want to thank all the professionals on this forum as your exchanges have provided much educational materials to average-joe consumers like me. I've been reading this forum for about a year now. Second, I'm about to replace both of my heat pumps for my home.

+Background Info
- Location = Fort Worth, TX
- a 2-story house that's about 2,600 sqft of living space
- upstair HP unit is 25 years old (has to go); downstair unit is 16 years old
- Both HP units are 3-ton
- Received bids from 3 professionals and chose a small, local installer who comes highly recommended by a neighbor; and he has competitive pricing and appears to focus on the "install quality."

+Questions
- I'm looking at installing 3-ton units from the Amana Distinctions line, but have yet to decide on 13 SEER or 14 SEER units (e.g. GSH140361A). The price difference between the 13 and 14, for both units together, is about $1,500. Thoughts??? Any input is appreciated.
- I've read that variable speed blower is more efficient. Is this still the case? What about reliability? Is there much price difference?

Thanks in advance.

Ken

I understand. Hence, I didn't ask for anything about the costs of those units. I merely asked whether the price delta is warranted. But, if that's not allowed either, I apologize.

Sticky situation on pricing. Since you are asking whether it is worth it, I'll answer. Even in a hot climate, would take a long time to pay for $1500 gaining 1 SEER point. If that price includes variable speed blowers too, then savings in constant fan operation and heating operation would make it more worthwhile.
