A scientist at Stanford University says he may have the key to detecting earthquakes moments before they happen.

When an earthquake hits, there's only one reliable way right now to determine its location and strength. That's through a seismometer. But researchers at Stanford are working on detecting quakes using technology that's right at your fingertips. A computer chip is located inside every laptop already. If you drop the laptop, the chip senses movement and protects the hard drive before it hits the ground. This would also be used to detect earthquakes.

Right now, there are 600 laptops around the world linked to the system. And researchers will soon ship out 11-hundred USB cables with chips on them for desktop computers at schools and fire stations.

I heard on the news that their going to use this technology to integrate into things like an elevators, stopping it at whatever floor when it gets the signal, etc, etc.

I thought it was pretty neat news and had to share, lol

Any of you guys out in Cali hearing about this stuff? The east coast news said they were planing on putting this into schools, colleges, etc.

I can see it now - the guy that smacks/kicks his pc when it doesn't operate correctly will be giving earthquake alerts! :D

Maybe they'll just put it in Mac's!

Great - not only do we have N2, LonTalk, BACnet etc - now we're going to need EARTHnet (or maybe DIRTbus? Or BACyardnet, Or maybe LAWNtalk?)

I bet it will be something similar to the power companies command now to switch over to a secondary power source and named as you described :D

I am doing this this large data center job now with 7 different protocols and its simply amazing the amount information that's coming in, imagine when Sedona comes out how much there will be to integrate

It is most certainly a good time to be a SI ;)

Why, because they are never used?

Well, you most certainly will "never" catch me with a MAC for sure ;)

They were talking about some USB thingy that would attach to ? and do the same as a MAC or a Think Pad, Think pad,,, bahahahaha yeah right!!

The whole thing to me, just comes across as interesting and applicable to SI'S....

Good point  - however, you've got to give them credit they have had some awesome commercials. I've got a buddy that writes software for a living and has his own company...anyway they all use Mac's and love them. He made some points about them that has me interested, but my applications are not going to support them anytime in the near future so I bagged that thought.

I do like NINAX's names though - very good LOL!

Those were nikko's suggestions, although I can imagine NINAX's BACquakeCRAP suggestion coming soon:D

NikkoNow we know what goes on in your office--- usually ideas like this result from beer consumption.
