Whether he was referring to Palin or not, he clearly made a mistake using the analogy in light of the joke she made at the convention.
It makes him appear petty.
I just watched Olberman kiss his ass for about 10 minutes on his show. Obama is much more at ease when he's got an audience who hangs on his every "uh".
I had to take an acid blocker after listening to all that crap.
Sadly, it's being swallowed by some.:(

In private, I can just imagine the conversation:
"it wasn't supposed to go this wayyyy!! I beat her, I'm supposed to be ahead all along. I'm the messiah! I'm the world citizen! IT IS WRITTEN!"
So, Obama was supposed to be the candidate of change, the one 'above' divisive politics, the one who would 'bring us all together'. He's totally against negative ads, divisive statements, politics as usual, attack ads....and all that....So, where did that guy go? I mean, he ain't in THIS election. ;)

Let's face it, these people don't write or come up with most of what they say. Obama's recital of the lipstick on a pig comment sounded almost like he didn't understand what it was he was saying. He was repeating something that a not so bright speech writer wrote for him to say. If you are not comfortable with what you are saying because you may not fully understand it, it comes off phony, and that is how Obama came off with the lipsticked pig comment.

I think the concept of which you speak is more true than we would want to believe.
Think with me here: We are, in effect, electing someone based on their personality and their ability to recite a speech they may or may not agree with... kinda sick if you ask me.
Given that, I still think Obummer is loosing his (emotional) edge somehow. His comments just do not stir the excitement they used to...
And honestly, I think he is in a no win situation with the lipstick on a pig comment: If he apologizes (which I think he will), he admits defeat to the GOP on that one... If he refuses to apologize he confirms that he is a sexist and dislikes women... a belief that will not go away easily regardless of what he does...
The guy is toast. If someone is a trend follower, a wise move would be to jump ship now before one sinks...

Senator Obama today:
Sen. Barack Obama on Wednesday accused Sen. John McCain's campaign of engaging in "lies" and "swift boat politics" in regard to his comment about "lipstick on a pig."
Sen. Barack Obama dismisses GOP criticism about his reference to "lipstick on a pig."
"Spare me the phony outrage. Spare me the phony talk about change," Obama said at the start of an education event in Norfolk, Virginia.
"We have real problems in this country right now. The American people are looking to us for answers, not distractions, not diversions, not manipulations. They want real answers to the real problems we are facing.
"I don't care what they say about me. But I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift boat politics. Enough is enough," he said, referring to how Swift Boat Veterans for Truth launched attacks against Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race.
So, Obama wants it to stop but then he calls the Republicans liars and phony...?? I'd say he's the pot....but I wouldn't want to start any kind of innocent remark incident...

Earlier Wednesday, Obama's campaign announced it was launching "Alaska Mythbusters," a group of Alaskans that the campaign says will "set the record straight" about Palin.
Former Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles and Bob Weinstein, mayor of the city that would have been home to the "Bridge to Nowhere," planned to discuss Palin's record in a conference call later Wednesday.
Obama's group comes the day after McCain deployed the "Palin Truth Squad" to fight future attacks on his vice presidential nominee.

October 11, 2007 Des Moines, Iowa:
McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

Well, I think too many people get upset over the natural mudslinging that goes on. It's not like both sides don't pull the same crap and then chastise each other for doing so. It's absolutely ludicrous.
We can't stop it, so I say have a little fun with it. Well, actually we probably could, but it's just not that important. Plus... pssst... I think people LIKE it. :)
I mean, people just go bezerk over the silliest things. There was quite the outrage in this town (Boston) when we were shown the back cover of some NY newspaper the other day with the following headline;
YAHOO!: Tom Brady is injured
People were going ballistic when, as it turns out, the NY newspaper was *accrediting* the YAHOO! web site for breaking the story. :)
Now, personally, I think that Obama was referring to the policies of John McCain with that comment, but anyone would have to admit that it was very poorly timed and for that reason alone in extremely poor taste.
Just one man's opinion.

From Snopes................
The actual intent behind Senator Obama's misstatement is easy to discern without the need to invoke an obscure international organization. He was trying to express the thought that in all the time he had spent on the campaign trail so far in 2007-08, he had visited all (48) of the states in the continental U.S. save for one.
As for the 57 Islamic states.....
As for the next obvious question, depending upon the definitional criteria used, there are more or less than 57 Islamic countries/nations/states in the world. If an Islamic state is defined to mean any country in which a majority of the indigenous population is Muslim, then the total number of Islamic states is actually a little lower (about 52). All such numbers are estimates, however, and are subject to additional definitional criteria.

I personally just thought he was ignorant of his United States geography. Since he was educated in his early years outside of this country, that could be a real supposition.
Most people that have problems remembering how many states are in our Union think either 48 or 50 though. Which seems to be a much more acceptable mistake since they're taught in school about the contiguous (lower) 48 and the 50 total--I still wouldn't expect someone that's wanted to RULE those 50 states for several years now to confuse how many there are....

Obama did say everything he is accused of saying about how many states he had visited and how many he had left to visit and how many he could not visit and the total adds up to 57. So, this is true.

Oh, I now see what Mrs. Reb was referring to.
My apologies Mrs. Reb.
Jim A; Please do not mistake me for an Obama fan, because I'm not.
I do believe he knows how many states are in the union and simply made a mistake.
And if you're complimenting me on objectivity, I appreciate the comment but I also have to note that you're not being very objective by making that type of comparison you made between our president and Obama.
I respect GWB and would like to point out that he is a 2 term president while Obama, at this point, remains a 143 day senator who leaves me with more than just a bit of curious nervousness when I hear his proposed platforms.

Yes, it is false. Do the math. That way instead of attacking Snopes, you'll figure it out yourself.
I have found Snopes to be very objective but apparently they are only objective to some if they are giving the people they endorse a favorable review.
Are you also someone who suggests that Obama was referring to the Islamic states when he mistakenly said 57 instead of 47?
Are you related to Karl Rove?:D:D
My point is that it's very extreme to insist that Obama doesn't know how many states are in the union.
I'm sure that you really do believe it was a mistake but that you simply intend to keep denying it.
If we are going to criticize an entire religion as extemists, we probably need to examine our own prejudices too.
Actually, I think the 57 state Islam thing is a pretty far stretch. I think that Obama just cannot think on his feet and is not as in tune to reality or quite as practical wise intelligent as he is a decent orator.
Obama is a box of soap that is being sold to those who only read the hype on the front of the box and not the ingredients on the back. We really do not have any idea what Barack Hussein Obama is made of.

If you have his exact quotes and the context in which he made them, I'd appreciate your half-witted sarcasm a little bit more.
Oh, I don't. I guess my attempt at sarcastic humor was about as good as yours.
Well, I agree GWB is pretty crummy as a speaker but I'd have to get examples of these "things" Obama has said that aren't true to be able to respond to them.
If you have em', let's go through em'.
And just for the record, every candidate I've ever seen since I started voting has projected inaccuracies, so I don't see Obama as any better or worse in that category.
I did not mean to sound sarcastic. I assumed since you were involved in a discussion about Obama that you may know the basics of what is being discussed. If you have no clue as to what I am referencing in all of my questions to Obama, then there is no need for us to discuss Obama at all because you are simply clueless about what is going on with the man.

I don't know what kind of fuzzy new math you are into, but here are the facts;
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_organization) with a permanent delegation to the United Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations). It groups 57 member states, from the Middle East (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East), Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa), Central Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Asia), Caucasus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasus), Balkan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkan), Southeast Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeast_Asia), South Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asia) and South America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_America). The official languages of the organization are Arabic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_language), English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language) and French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language).
So, it can certainly seem to some that Obama has the 57 Islamic states on his mind more then he has the 50 states of the United States. Maybe he gets states delegated to the United Nations confused with states delegated to the United States. He certainly has made little effort to convince those concerned that he is dedicated to the U.S.

For all intents and purposes, Bush IS running for pres.
Well, maybe only 90% of him is.
This is completely wrong in every aspect. Do you have any clue what an election is? Are you only capable of reading bumper stickers and comprehending one line sentences with catchy phrase words in them?
Please, if you are going to enter a discussion, please try to have something to add that is above a third grade mentality.

Never once thought you were an Obama man but your willingness to look at the facts and the likelyhood of his not knowing amt. of states was refreshing!
Obama wasn't my first pick but he'll get my vote just because he some of my views, at least pre-election.
As to my objectivity, I try, but the overall venom, hatred, outrage and nuttiness of this election creeps up and before you know it I'm ranting too. I'm afraid the elephant in the room is racism judging by some maddening comments. No elephant pun intended..The essence of change for me is ... Do I think Obama will do a worse job than John M. will? Pretty cynical outlook but been burnt before...(compassionate conservatism). I enjoy the forums and listen to both sides
and make up my mind thusly. As to the present Commander in Chief....
Some of my biggest gripes are the way he's so obviously detached from the decision MAKING and dosen't do a lot of homework in global realpolitik and the low esteem he places on the diplomatic corps and alternate solutions.

There are not 57 states in the United States.
Obama appears to think of himself as a Muslim (multiple accounts verify this)
Obama born before the Selma AL racial outbreak and therefore could not be a product of it as he has claimed.
Obama's father was not a goat herder as he has claimed.
Obama does not hava an uncle who had anything to do with Jewish prisoners in WWII....as he has claimed.

It certainly was not my intention.
Here is your list of questions....
How many states are in the United States?
Was your point to not suggest that Obama did not know...or what? Please enlighten me.
Allah says; Do you think of yourself as a Muslim but claim to be a Christian?
I'm dying to hear your answer on this one.
Has Obama not claimed he is Christian for how many years now?
Why would I assume he is any less Christian than say...you??
When were you born?
What's the deal here?
Are you suggesting he is attempting to fabricate his age??
Was your daddy a goat herder?
This one appears like it came straight from a community talk forum or Veterans Dspatch.
I assume you are of the opinion that his statement is a lie.
If so, please show some proof that his statement is inaccurate and I don't mean "facts" from an OP-ED.
Do you have an uncle who liberated Jews from a concentration camp in WWII?
Obama's uncle was a part of WW2 and it's verifiable that his service included Europe. I'd just like to see something more than an OP-Ed that refutes his statement and proves it's untrue.
How much Black influence is in your genetics? The man is free to define himself as black and ride the black experience all he wants to.
I'd agree that his best support came from the white influences in his life, but I can't speak for the man and neither can anyone else.
Were you a college professor?

Maybe he's like a goldfish with only a 3 second memory. Sometimes he thinks one way, another time he thinks the opposite way but most times he just isn't thinking at all:rolleyes:

This is the internet Glen, you have no idea who you are talking to or if I'm even a real person. You seem to pick your battles and hide behind a referee. Does that seem more French to you?
I don't report violations to the "referees" but I have pointed out a violation on my post in the past when someone went way to far in violating the rules. I don't engage in "battles" though just having fun debating on this forum.
Look who's talking about picking battles. You kinda dug into robo a little there but he is fair game and a big boy so that's OK just like I shot one across your bow there. touche (how's that for my "French"):)

You mind speaking English or at least inform us to what if any recognizable language you are using. Sounds like baby talk or babble to me.

Not sure what farrah jocha would refer to. Maybe you are trying to say that Farrah Faucet drinks chocolate coffee, but even in French we don't think you know what you are talking about:p
Now frera jaca fits you a lot more since it asks; are you sleeping, which seems to be most of the time you are posting.
