I know the popular vote has a little to do with it, but doesn't actually elect the POTUS.

Doesn't the canidate win states with a certian amount of votes and then those votes count toward the election. So a small state is weighted to counter a large state?

Yep the popular vote in each state elects the "electors" who are pledged to vote for the candidate they represent. They then go to Washington and cast their "electoral" votes for the state's choice for President. Now an "elector" can actually change his vote and this has rarely happened but it has. The number of electors each state has is in direct proportion to the population of the state vs the other states. I believe that there are somewhat over 500 electoral votes to count. Can't remember the exact number.

I remember in school a teacher stating a democracy is not majority rule, but protect the minority.

I think the Electoral College is a good example of this.

Yeah the thing is those activist judges are also part of the minority being protected from the majority. Same with Federal over state laws, and why Iraq might stay a democracy but will never have any free people in it.

The layout of the government is not as simple as what most people think.
