I ran accross this old beast today. it's going to cost as much to remove the asbestus as it will to replace the boiler.

whats not in the picture is 200 feet of pipe that is covered as well. we are pulling all the piping down and redoing it to get it tight to the joists. customer wants to remodel the basement. technically we are working for the remodeler. he has a company coming in to remove asbestos on the boiler and some other plumbing

In no way would I make a recomendation that could endanger men women and children, not to mention pets, by advising them to do asbestos abatement. And on the legalities, where do they put it, in the weekly trash?
You need to stop giving this advice immediately.

I wonder what brand and model equipment from our generation (70's-2030) will be working a hundred years from it manufactures date. I doubt any AC's will make it.

ewww abestos scary stuff...wouldnt wanna touch that stuff..
One of my Wholesale Supply house managers' older brother died from Asbestos Fibrosis about ten years ago... he used to strip asbestos out of old buildings wearing only a dust mask.
It's some nasty sheet!
I have told home owners to NEVER disturb or touch the pipe insulation OR the boiler that may be covered in furnace cement or ceramic fibre, because I can't tell the difference between those and asbestos at a glance (So THEY certainly wouldn't be able to). Why take the chance? I would subscribe to emotional black-mail if need be by telling them that their first order of business is to budget to have a professional handling company come it to remove it and clean EVERY fibre from the house! Because they are at potential risk... especially if they start ripping and tearing during home renovations and unwittingly expose all living persons/pets to the dangerous substance.
