I have two Goodman compressors behind my house. The wife wants me to build a fence around it as they are next to my patio. I need to know the minimum side clearance to the fence.

The fence will allow decent airflow. The slats will be 1 x 6 with about 4" between them, and the fence will be about 42" high. The units are about 18" from the back of the house. I was considering 18" of side clearance.

Also, will a covering over the top, 6 feet high affect the ventilation ? I could easily build it without a cover. We get many leaves there in the fall.

wouldn't do a cover!!! it will cause recirculation and that will ruin your performance and efficiency :)

have system serviced for leafy removal :) should have it serviced at least once a year ;)

I am NOT an AC Tech...just a homeowner...

Since your condensors are right next to your patio....I would think that NOISE might be a consideration. We have a wooden fence some distance from our condensors and I notice that the echo off the fence makes the condensors sound a tad noisier than they actually are. I would think that boxing them with cedar/pt 1x6 in a closer vicinity would create a real echo chamber. It might make things look nicer but....you would likely not enjoy the increased noise when you were out on your patio.

Perhaps large open lattice?

Ask you hvac tech about getting sound blankets for the compressors. will cut the noise from compressors a tad.
