I was told by the propane company that you can't run a furnace off of a 120 gal tank. Is that correct?
Now that I have a heat pump, I was really hoping to get rid of my 500 gal tank and go to a smaller size. She said they only carry 120, 330? and 500. And that I can't run a furnace on the 120.
Thanks.

you can run a furnace off a 20 pounder if needed. they don't even have 100 pounders for people that only have a gas range? somthing fishy going on.

depending on location they may require a certain size tank so that as the propane boils off the tank does not get to cold.......
i'm sure someone that does a lot of propane will be along to say its BS or give the reason, we just don't see much of it here.

We do quite a bit of propane, and you won't have a problem running a furnace on a 120 gal tank, you will have to fill it up more, and usally the min amount is 100 gal, so you could end up running out or get charged more because you didn't get the minimum.
I would keep the 500 gal, some day there might be a price dip, and you can fill it up and save it for later use

I called another propane company to ask them about it. They said you could use the 120, but if it got very cold, there is a chance the propane wouldn't vaporize correctly.
I was really hoping to get rid of the 500 because it takes up so much room. The 120 could be tucked beside the house. Another issue with keeping the 500 is if I don't use a certain amount based on tank size, they will charge me extra.
Thanks to all who responded.

They don't want to come out and fill it every two weeks during the cold weather, and make only a few bucks off of each delivery. They have to pay for gasoline or diesel just like you.

Hmmmm possibly. Would that take care of the supposed vaporizing problem from just having one 120 gal?
I am hoping since I will be using the heat pump for the majority of my heat that a 120 gal (or 2 of them) would provide me with 2 or 3 months worth of LP.
