I'm really kicking the idea around of getting a camera to check heat exchangers.Who uses them? What kind? How do you like them and ballpark how much can I expect to spend?

I use IR for hvac daily- many cameras and many price ranges. You need to take an Infrared course for the camera operation .You need to know what you can't do as much as what you can do which is endless.
If your skill set is sound then the camera will magnify it by 100 fold.
get one.

just sold my ridgid see snake today and receiving a testo model tomorrow. very thin scope shaft + you can mount it with the magnets on the back, leaving your hands free to operate with out the awkwardness you get with the gun style borescopes. it also has a rca jack incase you want to record inspections. not bad for $220.00!
shaft + head piece too large on ridgid. i broke off the head piece finding a cracked steam pipe in a wall, really pissed me off. not a bad first stab by ridgid though, i think every company and there mothers uncle will be making different qualities + price ranges within the next year. there are some really expensive ones out now, so it depends who you want to impress!

I have pretty much used and tested every one out there.
They all have their benefits, and they have their disadvantages.
