There are some units like that down at Coney Island in Cincinnati. Safety guy said not to go near them. Condenser coils probably haven't been cleaned in years.

Judging from the building construction type...

There was no engineer involved in that crap pile. Jackleg Johnny and his cousin Harry Hackman installed that junk.

just when you think you've seen it all!! what on earth were the installers thinking? (were they?)

I agree. I put the blame on the idiot that installed it. AND, the inspectors that signed off on it...if there were any inspections.

UH, Huh. Yeah that's a safe install alright. What a way to get someone killed over a few bucks. What an effing shame.

1 out of 5 service companies would have no problem sending a service guy out to work on that. Does the actual service guy have the kahonies to refuse to work on it? I hope so. Some oufits will install anything, service anything, anywhere you ask them to. The poor service man has to beware. If there are obvious issues like we see, what lies beneath???

Yes, definate on passing that one off to one of those 1 in 5 companies that would tell a tech to work on it. Thank god I don't work for one of those. We were looking at this in the shop and one of techs thought he may have recognised the unit. Thinks he may have turned down the job under a previous employer. Our service manager really wonders who the responsible approval authority was that allowed it to be placed in service to begin with. They must have been well payed under the table.
