they quoted me and I am thinking of going that route the 4" media filter over the standard 1".

I have heard some say they are not worth the extra money but what do you guys think. I like the fact that the box is sealed with a door better then the slot for the 1" thsat can suck up basement air and put it upstairs.

Not sure if thats a good enough reason to go with it. Wont the thicker filter caus more restriction ??

Twilli where r u ?;)

ok maybe this way better, is the 4" filter more restrictive than a 1" pleeted filter ?

Is the 4" pleeted a better filte than a 1" ?

And will a Honeywell filter fit in any 4" rack ?

Thanks Twilli :p;)

There are lots of different types of filters out there.
I truly believe that any type of BMAC " box medea air cleaner" is better that your 1 " .
A.A. 5000 is a good filter but can't be rated by MERV due to being an EAC "electric air cleaner" .
Still any type of April Air is good. ( Space Guard)

But for ease of replacement I would recommend what your contractor suggested.

contractor suggested the 4" Air Care but It still seems by going 4 times as thick the 4" would restrict the air but noone here seems to answer that:(

I know there are lots of good filters but these are the 2 we are looking at.;)

Twilli gave you the answer go with the 4 inch honeywell since you resist Twilli's advice.

Check out this post's attachments;
http://www.hvac-talk.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=1571464&postcount=36

There is a chart in one of the attachments that will tell you all you need to know about filters and pressure drop. Filtering is one thing, but keeping your system "efficient" is another. Use the thicker filter to help both.

ok maybe this way better, is the 4" filter more restrictive than a 1" pleeted filter ?
Most of the time no, if you use the cheap 50¢ fiberglass, then 1" is not as restrictive. But if you used the electrostatic, then no.

Is the 4" pleeted a better filter than a 1" ?
Yes, it has more surface area, and only needs to be changed out once or twice a year, where 1" should be replaced every month or two.

And will a Honeywell filter fit in any 4" rack ?
It can replace most EAC cells, and can work on some Aplrialre.

The 4" pleated is much less restrictive than a 1" pleated. the filter is not actually 4" thick. its about 1/16 inch thick but folded like an accordian to give lots of surface area. Its hard to explain, but easy to understand when you look at one. Take a drive over to your hardware store or home center and look at a 4" pleated vs a 1" pleated. you will be able to see why the 4" offers much better air flow, plus since it has more space to catch dirt, it lasts alot longer before plugging up.

interesting reading, thanks even though I probably dont understand 100% I get the idea.:)

Twilli, I appreciate your insight, you ever eat any cows tounge ?

Thanks again fellas, i just saw a guy on Fox talking about a world without oil. He said in 10 yrs China will be using 100% of the worlds output in oil.

Saudis pump 10 million barrels a day and the US uses 20million barrels a day.

Good time to switch to gas I guess:o

Twilli, if it takes 8 ounces of powder to blow the horns off a bull, how much hen manure does it take to drop 3 feet and break a shingle ?:D

I will think about another issue:p
