View Full Version : Heat Pump: replace compressor or get complete new system?

On my 10 year old Carrier heat pump, the outside unit is rattling. First tech said it was the fan motor (around $XXX parts and labor). Second tech brought the fan out but the rattle remained. Put old fan back and said it was actually the compressor (around $XXXX parts and labor).
First question: If I replace the compressor, can I get 5 more years out of the system? Never had any problems with the rest of the system (indoor or outdoor).
Second question: For a complete new system (seems to be $XXXX-$XXXX) is it worth paying $500 more for an R-410 based system over an R-22 system?
Third question: Does Kenmore make a quality heat pump? Sears rep said it uses same main components as Carrier? Or should I stick with Carrier/Trane?
Thanks everyone!

Is the unit working and just making noise? or?

Unit runs well - giving cold and warm air just fine.

Please read the rules and edit out all prices.
Get other quotes.
If you decide to use Sears. I think you will find they don't install central A/C or HP systems. They hire a sub contractor instead.

It woulden't hurt to get another opinion on that rattle from another company. Lot's of possibility's there especially with it working fine.
There is no way of knowing how long a system will last with a new compressor. There's alway's a chance another major component will fail. It all depends on what shape your system is in and how much you are willing to gamble. I have replaced HP compressor's on unit's up to 19 years old, but I have seen system's only 7 years old that were completely shot.(IMO)
Apples to apples there should be very little difference pricewise between R-22 and R-410A system's. Some, but not that much.

I would go along with what he said. Get another opinion on the rattle if its that bad. I've never really seen much noise come from a compressor other than just being loud, or completely broken (no noise). Screws left out from the case will cause vibration noises, along with misaligned panels.
Also agree that if you do need a new compressor you may want to think about replacing the whole system. Other parts can go bad as well and you could easily end up spending the same amount as it would have been to replace. The added bonus is a warranty on the new unit as well
