anybody have a good alternative to a weatherguard ladder rack?

I just (almost) cannot believe that they actually charge $1500 for a damn ladder rack!
(ok, so its the articulating model 523, but 1500 bucks?)

I know, I know, what is a back injury worth?

any other brands comparable? thanks all.....

The local welding shops make them around here for several hundred dollars. I have made my own for the last 15 yrs or so. I tried buying one with the service bed and it was a joke, so I made my own.

I have one of these from American Van Equipment, the double lock down version.

$507 + shipping

Not quite as fancy as the articulating ones, but still less hassle getting ladders off and on than an old style rack. Ladders are loaded and unloaded from the side, and mechanically locked in place.

American Van also has an articulating rack that is significantly less than $1500.

We have several different ladder racks scattered through our service department and the ones from American Van that Mark pointed out work well once you get them adjusted. I drove a truck with a set of them for several years.

Do a search for Adrean Steel ladder racks.

They are just over 1/2 the price of Weathergaurd. I bought a double ladder locally for the van and it seems to be good quality, installed it for free also.

That's spelled Adrian Steel, not Adrean Steel

You can also try your local salvage yard.

I picked up a set of 3 for my van, just cleaned them up and gave them a fresh coat of paint and they look like new, the best part was they cost me 15 bucks (5 bucks each). They also had alot of the shelving and cabinets that you get from american van.:D:D

I got an all aluminum one made by Ranger. $900.00 installed. Got tired of steel racks dripping rust on my truck body.
