The whole issue in on China. Curious place.
I think it was Wordsworth that said " The West shall shake the East awake while you have the night to morn.
Sounds prophetic.

10 YEARS????? You best be learning Mandarin Chinese. Thats going to be the new language of business, and it's going to be a lot less than 10 years.........

Thats assuming food shortages and famine don't cause a world war.

The other thing that is going to happen in the next 3 to 5 years is China will takeover Taiwan. They will wait till after the Olympics, but it will happen. Taiwan is a huge thorn in China's side and they want it back.

Here is a little trivia on China and Taiwan. Before Nixon went over to Red China and ate rice with Mao the economy of Taiwan with it's free enterprise economy was greater than that of mainland China. I remember hearing about their economy vs Red China back then and I was amazed at the difference. Their economy actually shrunk in the 60's with the Culture Revolution.

China has the highest number of annual deaths triggered by air pollution.

Having recently visited Shanghai, I can believe this. I saw quite a few folks on bicycles breathing thru face masks.

Probably. They have 1.4 billion energetic people.

I find the measure of English speaking people to be a useful economic indicator. This article lists China at 19th, which cannot be correct, IMHO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_English-speaking_population

Though this article claims China has 220 million English speaking individuals, which would not surprise me.

China expectation to overcome the U.S. economically is not a fact, it is a speculation based on current statistical data which can change in a heartbeat.

China is not going to continue to prosper simply because China will not abide by rules of economics that are beneficial for all and not just China. Why do I feel this will be the case? History! Historically, China opens it's doors to the world only long enough to absorb as much technology as it can before feeling culturally threatened. My prediction is that 2008 is going to be the beginning of the end of China being open to the rest of the world. Most likely the Olympics will be the catalyst that will cause China to retreat back from the rest of the world again. Then again, the Tibet issue is also becoming another strong factor that will cause China to again withdraw from the rest of the world.

What ever causes China to back up again, and when ever it happens, it will most likely not be a pretty sight. Historically, when China backs up from the rest of the world it is by extremely aggressive and brutal means. When China clears out those they feel are messing with their way of life, it is not by passive means. I predict that Western heads will be rolling....literally....within the next decade, probably within the next few years.

I wonder if China will again use Hong Kong as it's portal to the world and who China will make the Hong Kong deal with this time around.

Since the Deng Xiaoping era, the Chinese leadership isn't particularly constrained by Marxist/socialist ideology. They are admittedly a funny blend of socialism, capitalism, and authoritarianism. But I predict they will follow an economic growth model which will eventually make them an economic superpower, if one doesn't consider them one at the moment. I find it unlikely they will revert back to a authoritarian socialist regime, like North Korea, as they are pragmatic and see the benefits of capitalism.

They want showcase their efforts at hosting the 2008 Olympics, and they are going to shut down manufacturing operations in Beijing one month prior to the games simply to clear out the air pollution.. We'll see how well they do. ;)

The Chinese have increased war games in that region. More than "normal" and they have been testing medium range missiles. they have been rattling there saber for some time over Taiwan.

3 to 5 years is strictly speculation on my part.

I don't think China will shrink back either. There economy depends on trade. if they have another bad year of drought, their food supplies will dwindle to nothing. They will HAVE to deal for food. trying to feed 1.4 billion people is going to be a huge challenge for there government.

Within the next decade, China will either back up and close it's doors again, or China will be the next major warring country. Either way, we have allowed China to become a major problem by opening up trade with China.
