Putting the finishing touches on the rebuild of the compressor on a 650t York YKPBNBH-CVC. (Replaced bearings and shaft seal) Today while reinstalling the various oil lines I discovered that the compressor shaft is magnetized. Have never noticed this on any compressor before and not sure what can cause this or if this is cause for concern.

There's real no way to degauss the shaft and no concern for any worries. Had this on 500 ton YK after shaft seal replacement and called the factory when I discovered it. They said not to worry unless it started to magnetize the shaft seal components as well. Hope it helps...

You know how they say misery loves company. Planning to roll it over tomorrow and hoping not be miserable, but it's good to know I'm not the first to experience this. Checked today to see how strong a magnet I have and found that it would hold a 1/4-20 nut. Have a couple of pictures, but I'm guessing you'll beleive me without them. Thanks a bunch.

The shaft that I worked on would pull a screwdriver in that direction when put close to it. Hope the startup went well.

Start up went well. Got a little tripped up by a half ton tank that apparently has a broken dip tube, but the chiller showed no signs of any compressor problems.
