Microsoft could re-think plans to phase out its Windows XP operating system by June 30 if customers show they want to keep it but so far they have not, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said. (http://www.itnews.com.au/News/74720,ballmer-microsoft-could-keep-xp-if-customers-want-it.aspx)

if you aren't ready to move across to Vista it will be in your interest to let Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/contactussupport/?ws=support) know.

Does ultrasite run on Linux?
.... though to be honest I don't know if it runs on Vista.
I'm sure there's a lot of older control software that's not supported by Vista:(

Yes but why would you? Having said that I'm writing this on an old laptop running 98se. I've got 4 different communication programs running on it for the local supermarkets.

Does anyone use Linux for working on control systems? We have a few lower end laptops in my office that we were thinking about putting Linux on with some kind of Windows emulator like Wine.

Thanks

A bunch called Phasefail (http://www.phasefale.com.au/intro.htm) supply supermarkets with computers with their pressnet communication software running on Red Hat. It interfaces with their prescon control system. The pressnet client is a free download and is written in Java so I think it's cross platform. I could be wrong about that though.

Dell and some other PC manufacturers are planning on selling computers with XP for the foreseeable future. :)

re: Vista
Works fine on my home system. Works great on the three or four laptops I've seen. Unfortunately my CCN service tool no workie on Vista. A few other important proggies are busted too. Must have XP until Carrier, Trane, and a few others get off their a##e#.

I have used ubuntu on a couple of my laptops. I wouldnt even think about using wine with any controls package, wine is great for games but I would much rather just run virtual machines with the controls apps loaded inside - that way you can have multiple different isolated " installs" where the apps run natively and you can set up different ones for each system you work on to eliminate conflicting programs.
the best part is, when you get a new laptop you just move the vm to the new machine and everything is as it was on the old laptop.

Just got a new precision 6300....no serial ports just 6 x USB and no printer ports as in LPT.....Times are a changing and we have to deal with it..one nice thing is I dont have to use a cross over cable for ethernet connections...saves having another cable with the laptop/ etc......

Microsoft doesn't have to pay for huge ships and giant machinery.
But then come to think of it they did drill a couple of dry wells.
One was called ME and the other is called Vista:p

Tridium will eventually release their Supervisor to run on Linux. (beta at first)
They are looking at providing a full installer and configuration for RedHat.
Most likely other platforms such as Ubuntu will function but be considered unsupported - they'll provide basic instructions on where to put the software, but won't provide an automated installer.
