These are some shots of a CU bank that I put together last week at a Family Dollar store. I went there today to do the startups. The AHU's aren't anything special plus I didn't hang or install the duct so I didn't bother to get any pics of that.

This in a bad area of town so during the install I kept the cardboard carton on the units until today when I started them up. For the locals, it's on Rio Grande and L.B. Mcleod. The local J-mart is right down the street from here and they had some units ripped off recently.

Each one of the units has 4 hurricane holddown brackets on the sides and 4 hilti pins in the bottom to try and slow the thieves down.

This is a shot of the lineset rack I did for this. The only reason I put two racks on such a short line ( 5ft ) is to slow down the thieves. I would've only put one on each line normally.

I know doing all of this will only force them to strip the units down, which most of the time is what the do anyway but at least I tried. As far as I know there are no plans to install a cage, at least until they get hit once or twice IMO. But they plan on putting in burglar bars on the windows so go figure.

Other guys on the job were taking bets that they would only stand a week or two after they opened. Time will tell. :D

Why not use R-410A?

Why not use R-410A?

Because on commercial jobs you install what the engineer specs to use. This is commercial new construction so the golden rule is " follow the prints ". :D Believe it or not these units are heatpumps which is kinda rare to see in a commercial app. Almost all of them are straight cools normally. We had the choice to install Carrier or York and the Yorks were cheaper to buy so thats what they got.

Obviously in the near future there will be no more choice so it really doesn't matter anymore. Come to think of it I remember only installing one 410 piece of equipment for a commercial job and it was a resi package unit. I think it was for a walk-in clinic addition.

i like how you didnt use 7ft of sealtite on your electrical. I also like the unistrut with clamps on the lineset and conduit.

good stuff, looks like an install we would do.

same here, and only because they asked for the 410 rtu. we would have just installed a r22 unit like we always do.

thanks turbo. The electrical was done by some union sparkies that were helping out the sparkies on this job although the original electricians probably would've done similar work. I also think the idea behind the conduit was to help protect the wiring from the meth heads. The cush clamp racks were just there to help slow down the thieves and since I was putting a rack down sparkie asked if I would make it long enough for him to jump on. I maybe would've done one rack per lineset but added the other to help protect it some.

I seriously doubt it will do any good, especially since Fox35 did a news story at the job about the copper theft on the rise. As if we really need anymore advertising or promotion about this. You'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to not know it's going on. Someone told me that recently, another local news station did the same story about this and were broadcasting the current prices at the scrapyards. So if there was one or two guys that were on the fence about getting into this lucrative business, they should be sold on it now.

Really like the way you stacked the uni-strut to mount the conduit and lineset with. The condenser install is to nice for a Dollar store.

Aren't those 7.5 ton units? Pretty hard to find the pink stuff in that size!

I agree but I can't seem to skimp on the way I install stuff unless it was a really cheap budget job and I was told by the boss to slamdunk it, which this wasn't. When I met the inspector for the final today, the first words out of his mouth besides hello was " these won't last long ". I smiled and agreed with him. It is too nice of a install for this area but ohh well. At least I tried.

No these are 5 ton heatpumps. They spec'd R-22 as always

Thanks man. I wasn't really trying to plug the co with the shot of it in the pic. At the time I was more focused on snapping a few pics quickly before one of the locals saw a digital camera in my hand. If you must know, the last digits are 64. :D

Also here are some pics of the T-stats. They were factory mounted in the power panel and all I had to do was land my wires on the terminal block below each one.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4743/1000030dp0.jpg
Here's a shot of the panel.

This is a closer shot of the T-stat enclosure

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4218/1000031to5.jpg
Here's a close up of one of the T-stats. It's a Carrier Debonaire 400 commercial stat.

The panel was made by Hill-Phoenix and the sparkie told me he paid about 10K for it. It also has the capability to force the night setback via a manual wall mounted toggle switch in the managers office. The switch controls some relays that are tied to the dry contact switches in the stats. IMO this setup was way overkill for this type of store but I didn't design it. I also had to mount some zone sensors to the columns in the middle of the store since these things are all ganged together in here.

Thanks for looking. :)

Hey orlando,

Nice install, cant believe there not going to be caged though.

Those units wouldn't last a day in Ireland. Copper theft has been big business here for years.

Had a guy (a tinker aka gypo aka pikey) stop at job one day and take 3 feet of 5/8 and 3/8 copper out of a skip and throw it in his van. These guys make a living driving around the country collecting copper and lead.

Yeah and they all drive 1 or 2 year old vans or SUV's depending on how much copper they can rob.

Someone went thru a new development near here and stole 13 complete condensers with a Sawz-All...

At 8 am on a Sunday...In Texas where guns rule.

Big brass balls on those guys.

Super clean work man.

For the money that install cost, you would think there would be a fence guy following up right behind you.

Ductwork in a drop ceiling with standard diffusers I'm assuming?

Yeah the 1st day I got on the job I asked the GC when he was going to put the cage in so I could time out the CU install and he looked confused for a sec. I told him it is foolish to leave this stuff out here unprotected but it's not in the budget unless they want to add it on. He also told me today that they aren't even putting burglar bars on the windows like I was told earlier because they didn't bid in for it. They will be put in only if the customer wants it.

BTW, it would take more than a wimpy chainlink fence to stop them. Probably something on the order of #5 rebar and 1/4" thick angle.

Over here it's happened a few times where after a house was roughed in for electrical that the house would get stripped out all the way down to the staples like it was never roughed in. They would even have to go as far as pulling a seperate permit to set the CU on the day the house closes so the headache belongs to the new HO instead of the A/C company.

Most of the time over here it's the guys with drug habits that are cashing in copper on a regular basis. I don't think there are too many " professional " copper thieves that have been doing it a long time. IMO most of this has been fueled by the media doing stories on it over and over.

Yep.

Actually the CU's are relatively quiet considering they dont have any noise blankets in them. They aren't super quiet, just not real big rattlecans. The air handlers are a bit noisy though, especially after T&B got done with them. The ductwork was lined sheetmetal and insulated snaplock with flex runouts. The diffusers are the Titus TMS lookalikes. All main drops in the open area are 12" and each unit has only one return which I think is 18" ( I didn't do any of the duct install so I don't know for sure ).

Hope your right.

But it mus tbe happening if the media are reporting it.

It's so common place here now, that its not reported.

Everyody trys to hide the copper.

These guys would rob the milk out of your tea.

Well it looks like the thieves were at it again. They stripped out two of the five units ( the one I was in the middle of juicing up in the pics and the one next to it ) last week. We set the new ones today but I have to go back tomorrow and pull vacs and charge them up. I don't have any pics because I had some service calls in the morning while the other guys were doing the demo. Boss said he would take some pics for me but didn't. The thieves actually took the time to take the cush clamps apart to get the linesets and of course broke them off flush at the wall. Had to cut a hole in the wall to take the bad part out and extend it to meet up with a new tie-in piece for the units. What a PITA Pics would've been nice but it's not like we all haven't seen it before. Boss is happy since we ended up getting the replacement work in a time where we are slow.

Not that i'm aware of. The GC has hired security to keep it from happening again but after they take possesion of the store it's their game. I wonder how many will disappear the next time.

I'm surprised to see that it's not happening in your area. It seems that it's becoming a national pasttime for some income brackets. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to stop it except live security guards. The police say that about a 1/4 of thier time is spent dealing with the vandalized units everyday.

I remember that there is a security product on the market now designed especially for this called Warning Watchdog. It has pressure switches, a tilt switch and a NO/NC relay that will close when the power is cut or disconnect is turned off. It also features a very loud ( I think 118 decibels ) siren horn and can be all wired with T-stat wire. I think it can be used with up to 4 units too.

Here's the link:
http://jacksonsystems.com/search/161

I've never installed one but it seems like a good product, although I find it hard to sell one when someone is having to buy new equipment unexpectedly and then try to swing buying this too.

Knock on wood... maybe I just don't see it on my side of town. I want to say I've heard of Warning Watchdog before. That's true; people buy units and don't expect to have to think about their brand new units being trashed.

It is near downtown Orlando right near the corner of Rio Grande Ave and Michigan St. If you were standing on Rio Grande and looked north you could see the Citrus Bowl where the Florida Classic and Capital One college bowl games are played every year.

Nope. The new ones went right where the old ones were parked but now they ( the GC ) have a security detail on property now until the owners take possession of the property. They can't park them on the roof anyway since it's a red iron/ purlin deck system. I don't think it will hold the load of the units without collapsing. They will need to build a parapit wall/ cage of some sort to keep them out. This bait is too tempting for them.

Thanks for the comment. It's too bad I did a nice job on this since it will probably continue to be repaired/ replaced over and over again.

Thanks for the kind words. I try to do this kind of work on a regular basis if time allows. Unfortunately some jobs don't have as much time as others. We already installed the replacements and it seems things went off without any major problems. I did add a service sticker in the T-stat compartment of the power panel since more than likely this will be the first stop of the store mananger when he thinks something is wrong with the A/C. I/m trying to get the co. I work for to get some T-stat decals made up. All we have is the typical 4"x3" unit stickers.

So I guess with that logic I should from now on do the sh*ttiest work possible so the methheads will stay away.

Truthfully I really don't care if they stole all five of them since it will be job security to replace them when it happens. I just find it sad to do a nice job and have it trashed by thieves that either are too stupid to hold a regular 40 together or too lazy to get off of welfare and earn a living, except when it comes to this sh*t.
