We are doing alot of leg work in trying to replace our HVAC systems. So far we have obtained 3 quotes and all are in the same ball park. The sales person today recommended the Tempstar system. I understand this is a division of Carrier. After some additional research, I've heard that Carrier / Bryant has a law suit pending on their heat exchangers...they fail quite often.
Can anyone offer advice or information?
We've also been quotes on Trane.
Thanks.

The law suit is about a furnace problem, not A/C equipment.
Which line of the Tempstar.

Tempstar is only owned by Carriers parent company. The equipment is different. This lawsuit thing against Carrier is only going to get bigger. I talked to a nearby dealer who sells Carrier this morning, and he's ready to drop them because of it, and he's sold Carriers for 14 years. But you can't go wrong with a Tempstar..good equipment, good prices, and a real good warranty. Our distributor carriers both tempstar and Carrier, and they're doing they're best to seperate the two, they're worried about this lawsuit.

Same factories, totally different equipment although the line is blurring between builder model Bryant and ICP (Tempstar family) air conditioners!
The deluxe T* is as as good as anything else, the builder models are comparable to anybody's low end. Good warranties on the high end.
Since those furnaces are made here, Indy area is full of Carrier & Bryant 90s on horrid new construction duct systems. Sure change lots of boards but only have found 1 bad secondary and that's because the horizontally mounted furnace was sloped so the secondary didn't drain. While not a Bryant/Carrier fan, I think they may be getting a bad rep on this one. Other makers have had problems as well.

The bigger the name, the harder they get jumped on.

From what I understand, and this is just hearsay, Carrier knew about the problems with the heat exchangers and took steps to keep it quiet, including trying to get dealers to cover it up. Nothing really new about that I guess, but like Beenthere said, the bigger you are, the more you're going to get attacked for something like this. Though if it shuts up even a few people who swear Carrier is by far numero uno, then maybe it might be a good thing :p

Tempstar HP and AC's sure look like the older style Carriers to me, they just handed down the old design and engineering to ICP, huge improvement IMO.

I have been an air conditioning field service technician for over 32 years now and what I have found is that all air conditioning units are pieces of crap.......if not installed properly. I think you're reading into the equipment too much...... and not enough on the installers.

I don't know why you used my quote. I agree they're all crap if not installed properly. But about those heat exchangers cracking on the Carriers, I doubt they were all caused by sub-par installation.

Cairrer bought out ICP several years ago the parent company of Tempstar,ICP had a problem with 80+ heat exchangers back in the late 80s, as far as I have seen in 20+ years is installation problems.AIRFLOW!,AIRFLOW!,AIRFLOW!!:D:D

If most of the Carrier heat exchanger problems were caused by faulty installation, what does that say about Carrier dealers, and Carriers dealer policies? And from what I hear, Carrier knew there was a problem with the heat exchangers. And i'm not bashing Carrier, I think they make decent stuff, not worth the money, but decent stuff.

All brands have there quirks, I can they of a very popular brand that we were selling and there 410 evaps have been more trouble than it's worth. I myself have a Tempstar in my house and no problems yet, also very good warranty on the higher end equip.

myself of course, but i put the same amount of quality in a customers home as if it were my home. now if we can just convince others to do the same, maybe my oncall nights wouldnt be spent doing callbacks, but thats for another day.
