Have an NAE installed with a cable modem and a Linksys router. How do I remotely access the NAE?

If you are still confused about this, you are not alone.
Remember that the NAE is an XP computer. It should not sit out on the internet unprotected. It has no antivirus running.
Your best bet is to install a VPN router instead of your regular router. Choose one with PPP connection capability which will allow you to configure remote access without additional software through windows XP.
Once you connect, you can use the local address of your nae, eg; 192.168.1.1/metasys to connect.
If you are brave enough to keep your NAE on the internet, you will need to give it a WAN address. This is the address of your modem (must be static) with a dmz passthrough from the router. THIS IS PROBABLY A BAD IDEA THOUGH.
Good luck

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture. NEVER put this web-based system controller from "The leader in open systems" on the web.
Maybe they should call it a browser-based system instead.

There are NAE's on the open web. I have'nt encountered an attack yet (keyword yet). All web servers have some type of security in place.
The imbedded version of XP is different than the computer version on many fronts and is not regularly targeted.
But there are some similar objects, remote desktop for example, that warrant some prudence.
VPN routers are easy to come by these days, so why risk it?

The harmful hacking to a NAE is already a done deal fresh out of the box.
A internet hacker can't make it any worse. Hell, they might possibly improve on it.
