I know your're thinking hard about getting a Mod furnace, as am I, and just want to know how many wires are needed, rather than installing one yourself.

I have a copy of the .pdf, if you'll put your email in your profile, I'll shoot you over a copy (84 pages).

yes. i have existing wiring so if the furnace needs more than i have i also have to factor in having the tstat rewired. thats why i want to know. i also want to read the manual to see what this tstat can do. im still on the fence about the mod but its looking like i should do it.

i will put my email address in my profile after i post this thanks!

Twilli says if ampulman and plexus would move in together you could split the cost on this monumental decision and quit lamenting so much.

I found the answer: for mod with 1 stage AC cool you need 6 wires. groan. looks like i will be rewiring.

Thats the nice thing about the York mod, it doesn't require extra wires to modulate.

And the Coleman mod, reads your mind to know how much to modulate. :)

Good one, Twil. Not really lamenting. Just a little disappointed with the quality of some of the contractors I've dealt with.

Who knows? Some of them could be 'regulars', here.

Funny. It true some of us spend a lot of time learning and understanding what we are going to buy. i have to say that there is enough variation in features, prices, reliability and details that affect the over-all success of an hvac solution that its worth the time to learn and understand so that an educated decision can be made. there are also a lot of conflicting expert opinions which makes the ability to learn and decide that much harder, for people like me and him.

back to the tstat: the 6th wire is C - common to cooling secondary. i am wondering why this needed. is this needed just to supply power to the tstat so that it can be in self powered mode? is it really necessary?

i ask because re-wiring is a big job i'd prefer not to need to do. if C is not necessary, i can use my existing 5 wire. if you know, please let me know. thanks!

you need the 6 wires
the extra wire is actually the v wire for modulating the furnace
