what to do with old compressors

The place I work at had to change out some comps. from a chiller unit. We had a local company pull and replace them but since the unit and building was 5 years old and we have a on going lawsuit any thing we replace must be saved for evidence. Now the question is we got past that part of the lawsuit and was wondering how we dispose of these compressors.

Drain and dispose of the oil, then see if you can find a metal recycling center in your area, they will pay you to take them off your hands, I get 5-6 cents a pound for them, better than nothing.

Just look in the phone book for metal recycling or check with guys at the supply house you deal with. They know where to recycle stuff or they know someone who does. Just make sure you drain the oil first. I don't even worry about getting money for them. We just take all our stuff to the recycler and drop it off. Not enough money in it to hassle with.

Many of the chiller compressors are huge semi hermetics that are rebuildable. Some compressors have a great core value. I would simply call around with the model numbers and ask if they needed them and if so, what they are worth. Rebuilding these compressors is much cheaper than manufacturing a new one, so you just need to find the right person.

If that doesn't work, drag them over the scales. Metal is up right now.

put them behind your shop and let the junkers take them. You will find it very good to get to know scrappers, we have scrappers that buy our old condensers and package units off us. You will be very surprised how quick they add up.
