I have installed hvacpro on two computers that have xp running. The first is a dell using a usb to com port adapter and the other is a winbook that has a com port. Both computers I can use the com port for gx9100 and other programs but when I try to connect to a device through hvacpro with a cablepro I get an error that says com port in use by a dos application, then it will say do you want to reassign, it you say yes it cycles the same screens again. Is this a common problem how do I fix this. thanks in advance.

I have connected with xp and not seen this error, are you sure nothing else is using the port when you tried?

In your system properties:
What is your com port setup as (com1, com2, etc)
What version of HVACpro do you have?
What cablepro do you have? (old one or new)

HVACPro is version 8.02 and my cablepro is old but it works fine with my toshiba with windows 98 installed.I also have this setup and have no problems. I did however have a problem when comfortview was installed at the same time I was using hvacpro. Removed it from the startup menu and problem was gone. My kit is about 5 years old is pro-100 i think.

For USB support you will need to be at Rev 8.08 with the B patch.

Use the attached to stop the CView services taking control of the comm port.....;)

net stop "ComfortVIEW GUIService"
net stop "ComfortVIEW ActionService"
net stop "ComfortVIEW ReportService"
net stop "ComfortVIEW ObjectService"
net stop "ComfortVIEW CommService"
net stop "ComfortVIEW DDEService"

The "B" patch solves the USB issue but you have to
have versaion 8.08 first then install the patch.

with my winbook it couldn't be a usb issue becase I use the com.

Are you running, or have you run, Hyperterminal (or any other terminal emulation or communication software) on either of these PCs?

Have you rebooted these PCs?

Hyperterminal has a known history of not releasing a COM port, especially if the program terminates abnormally (ie, hangs, crashes, etc.). Other comm or term-em programs can do the same. Once they've taken control of the COM port something happens and they can't "let-go" like they should.

Many times, the only solution is a reboot. Now, if you've done that, and the port is still tied up, look at your startup and remove the offending program from the startup sequence.

Hope this helps.

I have never used hyperterminal with my dell (With the usb adapter) I looked under task manager to see if anything else was running and it wasn't. With the winbook (with the serial port built in) it doesn't have any programs on it except for windows and hvacpro due to the hard drive being formatted. I have tried to reboot both several times, I think I will probably just have to break down and buy a newer version than 8.0. I think this is the only thing left to do.

EDIT: Well after thinking about it for a minute if you the devices programs are already at 8.04b or greater you should be ok with the upgraded software.

PMI is The old Metasys OWS software. IF you have it autostart on boot with the net setup for the comm port you need for hpro it will take over the port. Thats why I asked.

The usb to serial port adaptor must be on comm 1 or 2

This was mentioned early in the thread but I do not see that you
addressed this.

Its assigned to com 1.
