WOW! What a goofy statement! This is a really fun election year!!!!!

Okay small-towners, come out, we know you are in there cowering under the bed with your assault rifle and bible and bigoted opinions of ethnic divirsity examples, come out with your hands up!

Interesting.....I forgot that the people in the urban areas, especially inner city neighborhoods, do not have guns. They also don't have churches. I guess Barak has to travel way out to the "sticks", to attend his nutty church services.

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama, an Illinois senator, said.

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," he said.

I don't have a problem with his thoughts. He's saying HE THINKS people get angry because the jobs are leaving. These people have to re-establish things in their lives and turn to what HE thinks is the result of bitterness to not having decent work. I don't think he views clinging to guns or religion is BAD in itself, just that people need to ground themselves. Typically they pick up a cause.

I do have to say nobody would be worrying much about immigration or trade if they had well paying local jobs and job security.

I do have to say you did a nice job of imitating the liberal media with a title to this thread that is misleading.

""When I go around and I talk to people there is frustration and there is anger and there is bitterness," Obama told a rally in Terre Haute. "They're frustrated and for good reason. ... They've seen their economies collapse. They have lost their jobs. They have lost their pensions." What I'd like to see is him blaming his own party for supporting unions that underfund liabilities and risk lost pensions.... At least he isn't tied up like Clinton with the lobbyists.

Yep..both Democratic and Republican parties support NAFTA and it's increasing expansion, whether they admit to it or not. Seeing is believing. Neither party gives a squat about "average Americans". It's all big business, all the time. It has been said many times, "just follow the money".

Unions..now the unions are to blame....I bet the majority of people that have lost retirement money didn't even belong to a union.....just ask anyone that worked for Enron.

Unions participate in underfunding pensions and health as a negotiation tool to keep companies under contract. Ask your union what percentage they are underfunded and get back to me and tell me that anything less than 100% funding is acceptable. Take a look at the auto industry and try to tell me with all the negotiations back and forth how they could have allowed underfunding....

EDIT- Another instance is when the union sets up the underfunded condition and companies go under. Look at the airline industry. I'll bet those people wish their pensions were 100% funded.

How True....There's a rigging company located out here where we periodically store and disassemble our chillers before we move them onto new job sites. They have a pretty good sized building that is always full of "used equipment"
The equipment comes from small manufacturing plants that have either shut down and or are relocating....this company is paid to go in and remove the tooling, store it and eventually ship it to a new location....What I find interesting is that in the early 90's most of the equipment was shipped down South (where labor was cheaper). Late 90's the equipment started shipping into Mexico.....I was just there in January and these guys are pretty busy...shipping equipment to China......

My point...If your job is to make something that can be made cheaper someplace else....you are eventually going to lose your job..Say goodbye to the blue collar middle class worker.... I guess I'm lucky.....until they can figure out how start and service chillers from Mexico or China I should still have a job.

When they figure the later out, we're all in trouble. My guess is, that he sneaky ba$tards, ie business leaders, will try to come up with throw away chillers. They will be made in China, or course.
These chillers will be made of recycled materials at the lowest possible quality and cost. Average life span; five years. there is no need to service them because it will be cheaper to just replace than to repair them. Not good for guys like us, but if we could figure out how to do this; we'll be billionaires in less than ten seconds.:o

First off....The article described Western NY and NY as the two areas where union rackateering takes place.....I would guess that there are many other types of mob activity that takes place there as well. You are wrong if you believe that this story represents the typical labor union in America.

As per why can't they just stay on the up and up?....I guess you could ask that question of any organazation. Our government, large Corporations (Walmart included), Religions, Boy Scouts...(I'm not slamming the Boy Scouts)....Sports...Any organazation where you have people...you will have some who will break the rules.

If you want I can send you some articles about local union workers and businesses building homes for "Habitat for Humanity" or various other activities that might make you look at us a little differently.....It won't be as interesting a read as the previously posted article!:o

Oh just that obama goofed big-time. I am sure he did not intend to imply what he did, BUT HE DID!!! :D I guess he was trying to empathize with small-town america, but that was a dumb snafu and perhaps candsid of his true opinoin of small-town america, to link ''job loss'' with ''clinging to guns and racism'' DOH

BTW
'''antipathy to people who aren't like them'''' I call that racism, I don't see any other way to read that part.

There is not alot of state hate in america, be honest, he meant racism because that is about the only thing of actual current event substance that would fall under the definition of ''antipathy to people who aren't like them''. I will admit he could have meant homophobes also, but I would say that the far laft wingers like obamama generally are always trying to lump the two into the same category anyway.

I'm confused or don't get your point...to me people that are different could mean people of different faith, political point of view, different nationality (not necessarily different race), non union, White collar, different profession, different taste in Music...(I like Hank Sr. myself)...follow a different football team....If small town mid-western Americans have antipathy towards people that are different...well I guess there is a long list of people that would fit into that category...

OK, it is good that Obama has a fan like you. That does not mean that others who did not take well to Obama's comments are wrong, we just don't see it the same way as you do.

I too keep a 9mm close at hand. I was bitter in my last job, but that was remedied by changing jobs. Obama is basically using people who are bitter to make a case for economical woes and against handguns at the same time. Sounds like Obama would like to make these small town people happy by throwing money at them and taking away their guns and religious values.

You know he was not referring to music and football, that is rediculous. Whatever he meant matters less than how it will be percieved, and it HAS ALREADY BEEN percieved as a reference to racism. Liberal politicians take circumstances in which unions had a role in creating and try to make it sound like a situation where more government control is needed.
Obama is trying to prey on those he feels need to have others take care of them.

Not inferring anything of the sort. I have worked beside many union workers over my years and found most to be hard working, ethical people.

However, the overall union structure works because it uses money and benefits not produced by the unions to basically bribe workers to rally their support of the unions. Just because you know someone hurt in the Enron debacle does not mean that the private sector (87% of the American workforce) has more corruption and failed promises issues then do unionized companies and government employees (13% of the American workforce).

I have been disgruntled over my work conditions over the past few years. I did what I needed to do and quit. I did not whine to some organization that cost the company I worked for money without production, I did what someone who does not need babysitting does; I quit and went to work for someone else.

Now; do you feel superior to me because you are union?

It is percieved as a reference to racism by many. You are perfectly entitled to not see it that way and that is a valid perception. But many do.

The only point is that obama screwed-up big-time with this statement. It feeds into the ''harvard educated elitist'' bias against him. There is no need to debate his intentions. He was trying to cozy-up to small-towners and had no intention at all to insult anyone, I got it. He just put his foot in his mouth! AND it is funny, that was my only real point, it is an election year and we got more snafus, flips, gaffes, and pandering than you can shake a stick at. Try to see the humor in it, all 3 of the contenders have plenty more time for future screw-ups. And the pattern so far is promising for much more. :D
