You really find some messed up stuff,

What does the HO say when you tell them what is wrong and what it will take to fix it?

Why are some areas of the country big on installing package units on residential rooftops? I have yet to see an install like that round' here.

HA HA HA!

Yeah the low roof lines are the EASY ones out here.

But there are Phoenix area builders who put these things two stories up, on 5 and 6/12 pitches with no safe area for a ladder!

Goto youtube. Search "hvac unsafe rooftops"
I have two videos. One with a two story I had to climb up, another video showing many rooftops as I drove around Peoria and Glendale (greater Phoenix area".

Then let me know what you think! :D

EDIT: I have 3 videos. One series is a two part.

I know that. What I am referingg to is that the low roof lines kinda set the standard of roof installs cause there was no room for a horizontal unit in the attic.

Now it's just become the nature of the beast.

Out here in the dry West, the old systems were swampers mounted on the roof. I suspect as mechanical A/C evolved the contractors were accustomed to installing/replacing units on the roof. And also what the others have said about small lots and no crawl spaces.

I have a 2 yr old house with a split system and the furnaces are installed in the attic. I was told that this has been the norm for about 8 years.

I had a commercial install similar to these. It was a new RTU on a flat roof of a plastics extrusion plant. My employer did the install and about three days later I get sent out to find out why there's water pouring out of the return plenum. I figure that since the place is usually a bit dusty that some dust has flowed off of the evap coil and plugged the trap. Boy, was I wrong.
The unit had been installed across the bar joist of the rooftop over an existing curb. A curb adapter was used but, to match up the plenums, the compressor end was hanging off in space with no support. Naturally with that being the heaviest end, the unit settled to that end and the drain pan, which ran the length of the unit, had the drain outlet higher than the other end of the pan so, overflow into the return.
I informed the boss, who promptly told me I didn't know what I was talking about and I'd better get the problem fixed. Well, I took plenty of pictures and took measurements for supports beams to be added under the compressor end of the unit and laid it all out on his desk the next day.
He became somewhat apologetic, that he screwed up, but got the crew out there and did what I told him to do and the problem was solved.
I still left the company not too long afterwards, had enough of his attitudes.

Oh, ok.

Lots of Phx area homes are on SIMPLE one story roofs.

I have to always make sure people know what knuckle headed steep a$$ 2 story roofs we have as well. :o

I did not do the installs = )

I will shoot anyone who crosses my line in the sand.

And over time, my line has become much more lenient, as I have come to realize the scope of the problem.

You have to remember this is the Old West.

First rule is: There are no rules (thus no permits or inspections)
Second rule is: Nobody enforces the rules.

Let's give a real-life example I've seen 3 times now...
Let's say you're in an area where there IS A permit required. And you didn't pull one. The Rigistrar of Contractors has you out for a jobsite inspection along with the homeowner for an issue that they have with the installation. You go out: the Registrar asks "was a permit pulled?" you say "no", he says "ok." Nothing more.

How many states does THAT happen in?

Sad.

Why do I post these?
Education. The faint hope that someone will see these things, and NOT do them!

Also, this is going to seem strange: I have no direct connection with my installers. But I do have to oversee their quality. Try and figure that one out.

It's called corporate America.

One day I'd like to run into you guys in the field. I think it'd be a pleasure. Definitely a relief from what I face day to day. And you're right.

Here's the thing that really gets me.
Phoenix is in Maricopa county. 100 miles NorthEast Payson is in Gila county.
In Payson when my boss got caught not having a permit he got fined!
He almost always pulled a permit. And they checked everything.

Then I came to Phoenix. The business owners and managers like the last few I worked at didn't believe me when I preached what did and did not pass code. They thought I was just crazy.

But they are just HACKS that learned all of their skills (or lack of) in this IGNORANT area of Arizona!
