some are a little obvious but is that what you are called in the office? where did it come from? did you spell it the way you did because someone else took your spelling?

my little sister called me "jayguy" for some reason when we were very young and i liked it! i have been using it ever since.

who's got the best story?

good luck.

Zeus

My Dad wanted to name me Zeus Apollo, ended up Scott Shamus. I wanted my boy to have the first two initials the same as well. First name Zachary, was within a second or two of Zeus......ended up with Zane.

So, all of my user names are Zeus.

On merchant ships there are two types of people. Snipes (engineers and the black gang) and all others. Sometimes refered as greasie snipes.

My user name, Osiyo, simply means "Hello" in Tsalagi (Cherokee).

I use it simply because I avoid giving out my real name online in public forums, and I'm half Tsalagi both by blood and raising.

Using more than one name actually comes pretty natural to me. My particular family clan (not all Tsalagi clans or bands are the same in their customs and beliefs) followed a tradition when I was born. I was given an "American" name which appears on my birth certificate, a Tsalagi "public" name, and a private family name. The Tsalagi public name is one that's generally known by everyone in the clan and related clans who knows me. The private family name is one only revealed to close, trusted family and friends proven to be trustworthy. That's in accordance with an old tradition and belief that if someone knows your "secret" name, or certain other kinds of "private" information about you then they have extra power over you. So it was just customary among my clan that certain "private" information was never, ever spoken about in front of "others". (outsiders, not members of immediate family or friends so close and trusted that they were considered same-as immediate family)

In addition, I answer to a few "familiar" names. Think of those as being like "nicknames". Generally only known and used by certain individuals or groups of people, individuals or groups with which I have some particular affiliation, association, and history.

For instance, in a certain time and place, far removed from here, I was called "Blade" by certain people. For reasons I won't go through here. Suffice it to say I always carry one, have since I was a pre-teen, and had an occasion where I needed to show that I could indeed use one, fast and well.

So, as I tell people, call me anything yah wish. I'll answer to most anything, including "Hey, YOU!", "Sh**head", or whatever. I've been called worse in the past, and probably deserved it.

Answering to multiple names has its advantages. When looking at emails or listening to the opening statements in voice mails (I rarely answer a phone call directly) I can usually quickly determine if I want to bother to continue to read or listen simply by filtering, mentally, based upon however the person is addressing me. If certain names are used, I will certainly continue to read or listen. If others are used I'm as likely as not to delete or erase the rest of the message.

I really wish I could change my user name. I don't know if I can. The name started out as a joke with the person who introduced me to this site. I honestly didn't think I would enjoy this site as much as I do, so I didn't put any thought into the name Trane_stud. I do work for Trane but I am really not a cocky person who consoders myself a stud. If I could change my user name it would probably include my nickname of Scotty, I started in the trade at 18 as a young kid and all the old guys called me Scotty. Now that I am one of the older guys the younger guys still call me Scotty. If anyone knows how I can change my username let me know............thanks

My 6th grade baseball coach came up with the 'Jaybird' one night at practice while he was pitching to me. B5-Magnum was a bat that we had in the sack and I happened to be swinging it at the time and one of the older kids put it together. I used to hate it till I got out of school and no one called me it anymore.

I had a coleman mobile home furnace load up on propane and guess who stuck a match in it.?.?.? I buckeled the heat exchanger so hard that we had to cut the door opening larger to remove the furnace form its cavity. The lesson learned........pay attention to the appliance and not the hot blonde homeowner!!:D:D:D

I chose this name so my co-workers wouldn't know who was asking the stupid questions and giving crappy advise. :)

chaard
04-04-2008, 08:40 AM
A co worker years ago at a pizza place saw (I think) the movie Friday the 13th. In the movie the girl screams Richard! So after that when I would walk in the door he would yell RICHAAAARD! But if there was someone on the phone taking an order, he would yell in a hush tone riCHAAAARD! Eventually he just yelled CHAAAARD! everytime he saw me. The other co workers got into the act as well.

I shortened it to Chard but that is actually used quite a bit so I put two A's in.

timebuilder
04-05-2008, 05:39 PM
My first forum was an aviation forum, and I learned that pilots intending to get their commercial licenses and move up in the aviation ranks had to "build time" in their logbooks. Truthfully, building experience is a better goal, but a pilot's experience is measured in the number of hours he has flown, such as hours of instrument time, multi-engine time, and turbine time. If you don't have the requisite hours, you are stuck until you get them.

So, for a time, I was a "timebuilder."

Jayguy - Thought by now somebody would have asked the question, not about your name, but rather your location. Got anything to do with the October 1979, British art-punk band Wire release of a single called Map Reference 41N 93W...or do you hail from the corn fields of Iowa?

04-11-2008, 10:26 AM
Ok mine is a little lame.

About 12 years ago my brother hat been hounding me to come to his place and play some game called "Rail Baron" with some guys.

I was signing up for something like ICQ late one night, probably with a few drinks in me, and Wheel Baron was what popped into my head. I became Wheelbaron online, and even had www.wheelbaron.com for 6 years. If you look up Wheelbaron on line you will find numerous references and 99% of them are me. lol

The few times I went to sign up for something and could not use Wheelbaron, was when I had already been there, and forgot about it.

underrock because all my friends tell me i live under a rock. I only have basic cable (got it 2 years ago) so I could get cable internet. I have never watched American idol. Don't need a flat screen TV. I drive a 1992 Ford Ranger with umpteen million miles.

As a young boy I figured out I could fly................oh wait wrong story.

My son was laughing at me as I tried to use the computer when I was learning years age. He thought it would be cool to be able to instant message between our rooms. When it came time to choose a name he rattled off three different names and like lightning typed hvac_superman into my computer and set up an account. It stuck.

Now this stinking site consumes all my free time.

Well, my name is William, but people called me Will for short and it stuck.
I never liked Bill for some reason. Co-workers at my 1st companies I worked for called me humorous names like "Silly Willy" "Will the Skill" and so on.
I thought about Ill Will, but it seemed too inappropriate for my character.
Then I came up with Chill Will, as in taking it easy under pressure and strenuous labor. Plus, what's heat without the cool? Just chill! ;)

seawolf 1
04-21-2008, 10:06 AM
Since I can remember my father's side of the family has told me a story explaining our last name. It is said that our family was Irish pirate types and they would go around pilliaging and pretty much anything they wanted. Kind of like the Vikings would do. Well one day they found this large ship and took it over and stole everything they could. It was a British royal ship returning home full of treasure for the Queen. She got bent and put a bounty on there heads. My family...The Seawolf's decided it was time to go to the new world and change there name before they became extinct. I have done a little checking into the story as I have grown older. I do know there were Irish named Seawolf but from there I am not sure. COOL NAME THOUGH.
