View Full Version : Replace all with Carrier? Ever heard of the 58 MCV or 24 ANA?

I'm being told I need to replace both HVAC units. Although neither have (as of yet) malfunctioned, they are making odd noises (AC fan/clutch?) or I'm told the motherboard is going in the Trane XL-90 furnace.

It's a story +1/2 house, with a finished basement (2300sq.ft. total) and the home and HVAC units are 22 years old.

We get cold winters (-20F) and can have very hot (100 degree) summers. I have no plans to move in the immediate future...

I'm being told to buy a 95% Carrier 58 MCV 080 furnace and Carrier 24 ANA 736A003 A/C unit. I'll be spending almost 5 figures on this setup, so I want to be sure I'm doing this correctly. The HVAC company is the largest in town and although I'm a newcomer here, I have no reason to distrust them.

I cannot find any info anywhere on these units. Are they that new?

Does anyone have any experience with them? I know they aren't the cheapest options...but are they worth the money?

Both are Infinity series

search this site for Carrier Infinity and you will see a lot of happy homeowners. In my opinion this is the best equipment on the market. The Infinity systems have been around for 4-5 years. They are increadibly smart without complicating the homeowner operation

Infinity systems are tops, but I'd want a better reason then you have stated that your system needs to be replaced.Did they say,"needs" or would be benificial for saving to replace.

What model numbers do you have and what age?Plus can you be more specific as to why you should replace??

The A/C unit is noisy and sounds like a fan and/or clutch are going. All this happens when the unit starts up.
Also, I've been told there's nothing that can be done to help it once it does go...by two different HVAC servicemen, form different companies.

The furnace is supposedly also on it's last legs. I was told the "motherboard" is going...which is why it sometimes short-cycles when it's really cold out. Other than thios, no other issues with the furnace I know of...

I was also told that if I replace one, I should do both as they are both 22 years old now.

All I see for a model number on the furnace is: Trane XL-90. I could tell you more about the A/C/ unit, if the snow would melt so I can get near it! Shouldn't be long now...we hope! Then...in a few months will be bithin' 'bout the heat up here!

I'm in no hurry to drop 10K...and I hear that if I act now there'll be 1K back in rebate?

Certainly Carrier will blow smoke up their own skirts...I want another opinion tho'!

You can't go wrong with this system the only other thing I would suggest is a heat pump 24HNA . With Carrier's rebates and utility co rebates there might be huge savings. Also have them show you the advantages there will be more or less depending on rates.

The HVAC guy estimated what I needed and did not do the load calc. He quickly offered and IS coming out today to do the calc. He also says he can do that w/o getting into the house?

AND it's NOT 58 MCV, he transposed the letters and it's the Infinity 58 MVC 080 that he's trying to sell me...

So, he came out and measured the windows and told me the system he quoted was right...

Did you see him measure the House and the windows. Or did he just measure the windows. it is very posible that he is really running a load. But with the information you have provided he could be pretending. normally I would'nt tell a home owner that they have the right to see the load. I would ask him to explain the load calculation process. If he gives a good explaination than he probably is'nt faking.

Either way he is offering you the best system on the market so he can't be too bad

I don't get it...another local HVAC company has been here to do an estimate and no load calc. When I asked him about this he said he could, but thought he'd get my sq. footage and offer me 2-3 options...

I thought I read somewhere in here not to trust anyone that doesn't do the load calc. up front??
