I've got 2 75 ton Trane Intellipack units that serve the food court in my building. Has any one else had problems with the wiring between the circuit breakers and the contactors. I have had to replace almost all of the wire because of the insulation being cooked off. At first I replaced the wire with wire of the same guage but it did the same thing so I've upsized the wire. The amp load isn't too high during operation.
Thanks, John

I once worked at a plant that had 25-30 intellipacks about that size. Seems to me I had 2 or 3 with wiring issues. Not burnt just bare spots from rubbing the conduit connectors.

i have seen this on one or two units before but only on one or two wires. i have not had a repeat occurance since.
good luck.

The wire size seems to be barely large enough. The wire going from the load side of the circuit breaker to the line side of the contactor is what is burning off the insulation. #12 wire with 16 to 18 amps on it. #10 wire with 21 to 26 amps. I have upped the size of the wire with no more occurances.

somebody's got to be the first to find a real issue before the service bulletins are written. luckily, you were able correct the issue in the field.
good luck.

I have repaired numerous connections, usually because they are on the roof with sun on doors , 140-150 ambient and the insulation degrades. It is really no big deal, just throw some new wire in, that is why we do maintenance.
I have seen where an outside control contractror has wanted to gain contol of reheat using the elec. heat banks of Trane unitts, not knowing these units are not desinged for or using mech. cooling and elec. heat at the same. Wiring size, breakers, ect., are not sized for this operation.

i just found a service bulletin, that on pre-June 1992 units, they are recommending/requiring that the wire be upgraded from #12 to #10 for the 15 ton compressors. the 75 ton units were not specifically mentioned, but they still use the same compressor.
good luck.

Thanks Jayguy for the info. These 2 unit were manufactured in '97 or '98. The wire size seems ok until the units are fully loaded up on hot day.
Again Thanks,
John

are your cond fan blades 4 or 5 blade fans?

They are 4 blade fans with 1 HP motors. I should add that they are 460v motors because the three phase 208 already have larger conductors.

I talked to Clarksville about this. They said the problem is with the plastic insulators on the ring terminals. They actually emit chlorine and corrode the wire. It's not a sizing issue. Once they quit using the insulators, the problem went away.

see it every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
on startup always check the wires to and from the breakers or tb1!!!!!!!!
have found hundreds i mean hundreds of voyagers and intellipaks with loose wires!!!!!!!!!!
very very poor quality control.
I guess those Indonesian:mad: school children are not as good as they are cracked up to be!

I don't use the insulated crimp connectors. I still get the same problems if I use the same size wire that was put in at the factory. If I upsize the conductor size all problems go away using the same crimp connectors.

No, it's the only one.
