Hey everyone. New to this board so let me know if I'm out of line anywhere.
Need some advice from true pro's...
A hotel's old McQuay system needs to be replaced. Quoted $70,000.- to replace the current old system with a McQuay Scroll Compressor, Model WGZ, 30 to 120 Tons(105 to 420 kW, 60Hz). 1 year complete warranty, 4 additional years on the compressor.
Sound a little high priced, or is this how much an entire system runs?

Pricing cannot be discussed on this site but that being said if that includes the eqipment it is cheap. Too cheap in my opinion.

70k for a scroll change out? Now there's what we call a "I don't have to sell anything for another month" sale.

70K for a 120 ton chiller changeout is too cheap? How can you guys say this without looking at the job? The poster is not giving enough info, location, air or water cooled, piping modifications, electrical modifications, etc. The extended comp warranty is a few $1000 right there. It could be under priced for all we know.

I do not know anything about prices at all they never tell me.
sometimes i hear prices from the customers.
I think we charged and I said I think!
$200,000 for 2- 60 ton and 1- 80 ton split including piping, evaporators, freg drive etc all done on overtime or most of it.
so 70k sounds fair to me.
There is no one who can say if it's a good price or not;
Is it down stairs in a basement which will present problems?
Is there a need to replace a lot of piping connected to it?
There are so many factors involved in bidding a job like this that the only way to know if the bid you have is to compare it to other bids. Always remember that you usually get what you pay for.

The system is located in the basement where the parking garage is. The compressor, switch panel, heat exchange unit, and piping are in the quote to be replaced.
Didn't know of anyone else that is qualified to do a job like this besides the factory refered McQuay guy.
Thanks for the input guys!

compressors? who needs NEW ones? LOL:D:rolleyes:
I am not sure where you are located. I'm in K.C.M.O. I've put in a lot of mcquay equipment over the years. It is really good equipment. You might call your local union hall and ask for some referals. I am not union any more but if you want to be sure of a good install you might stay with them. Don't forget you get what you pay for. Most of my work comes from bad techs.

Call 3 contractors and get bids. Simple question - simple answere.

about 95 % of the chillers last 15 years and about 80% last 25 years -- the warranty on the install & comp is a joke
a rough estimate would be 1200/ton, maybe down to 900 -- your estimate is bs

Is there something special about your hotel that says you must use McQuay. Gotta love it that you didn't bother to read the site rules or anything and just came on here to post a price question, you give the site no respect, so you get none. Obviously you don't know much about mechanical equipment that a mech contractor can buy from anyone and install it.

Sorry for the "Price" question as the topic for this post. Like I said, I'm new here. I would change the topic/title of the post, but I can't.
I'm basically looking for advice on how to get a correct quote and what I should look out for. Don't know about other brands that perform the same function and don't know where else to look in getting a quote from someone else!

Thanks for the advice, plee!
Definitely don't mind paying the piper if the installer is good at what he does. Problem is, I don't know what a good installer looks like!
Definitely don't want a guy like "Mr Flamer" aka "keepyoucool2003".
Obviously you don't know much about mechanical equipment that a mech contractor can buy from anyone and install it.
Wow... From the sound of it, you don't seem to care much about the contractor installing the unit. You make it sound like all contractors have the same knowledge, skills, and resources from the next guy!
you give the site no respect, so you get none
Already apologized for the price post and I can't change the title. If something this small constitutes absolute disrespect for this site, you need to get out more. The fresh air outside may make you less of a keyboard gangster.

I would start by contacting all of the major mfg's (Trane, Carrier, York and McQuay) and find out if they have local reps. They should be able to hook you up with local contractors to do the install. Get at least 3 prices. Read the scope of work carefully to ensure you get a turnkey job with no catches. Ask for references from each contractor and follow up on them. Go see some of the work they have done.
Just a few suggestions.

Thanks for listing other major manufacturers (Trane, Carrier, & York)
Do you think I can trust the contractor if they are a rep/branch of the manufacturer?

You can't trust anybody. Just get the three bids and hope the one you choose isn't from a bad contractor.
