View Full Version : CVHF oil problem

I just changed the thrust bearings on 2 CVHF's, one of them the pump makes great oil pressure, one, I can't get the oil pressure above 21#'s.It is not losing oil so no there is not a seal problem. I changed the oil reg and oil filter again today and it helped slightly. It makes 20# about 1/2 way on the adjusting screw, turning the reg in all the way doesn't change the pressure. On the angle valve on the filter block on the sump, what should I see for pressure and can I deadhead the pump by turning the valve to the change filter setting on the grenade style pin.

i do not know about dead heading the pump...but the only time we had an issue with lack of oil pressure (it was real bad), we found a slug of 515 in the oil line before the oil pressure sensor. this chiller had been running without problems since it was built...no oil changes or leak repairs or anything...it just showed up one day.good luck.

Thanks NYTrane, this is an early 99 so the filter block falls into the date, although I did change the reg today with no improvement.Insano, I don't always have smart ass answers, only smart ass answers to your questions. If someone has a legit question I answer it, not, how do I figure out what the subcooling is on an air cooled chiller because my company only charges 15.00 an hour and we hire illegals and unskilled labour.I don't care to give advice to a guy that has a plumbing, sheet metal, electrical, painting, hvac and sheet rockers are us sticker on the side of there trucks. I take pride in my trade and don't like to see it hacked up.I have no problem giving my knowledge to fellow tradesman.Aren't you glad I asked a question, now you know I don't know everything.
JAYGUY,I am leaning towards debris in a line or the pump , so I will pull the gas again and pull the pump and see if I can find the loctite.,or maybe the piece of the mcquay chiller it ate up.

The answers posted sound fair to me. Just out of curiousity, how high are you trying to run the pressure? Are you not making a good differential? (18-22 psid is the norm) Good luck w/ that.

I presume you did go into the oil sump when you changed the bearings . Also you say it has the hand grenade pin for oil filter changes. did you replace the gasket where the oil regulator block mounts to the oil sump head. If so you may have overtightened it and squeezed out the thin web of gasket that separates the pump pressure from the sump pressure creating a bypass. just something to check if your taking the gas out again. If this is the case use a new gasket and carefully scuff it up with sandcloth or a scotchbrite pad before you install it and make sure there is no oil to make it slip out again. Roughing the gasket up stops it walking out another trick is chalk or baby powder or if your stuck the dust of the top of the starter or condenser bundle works just as well . Graham .Trane tech

if that is the thread...i still don't get it.

it is sticky like grape jelly but it doesn't taste like grape jelly :D
nytrane...pretty good catch. i guess that i did not think about him changing anything out.
graham...also a good point about the gasket. i use an old die grinder scratcher pad that is really worn and i use it along with my die grinder to remove a very thin layer off of both sides of the gasket...makes 'em stick like glue!
good luck.

Its because captainstaino is a McQuay guy and acjourneyman dissed the product. Not really enough to turn into a stain about, but some of the people that think their gods gift to chillers that come around here feel the need to invalidate others opinions. JMHO
if that is the thread...i still don't get it.
good luck.

I had a cvhf1280 that had oil press. problems, there was grape jelly in the sump & regulator. I guess it could also be anywhere else in the lube system. Does your oil temp drop drasticly anywhere other than the cooler?
