I like McQuay equipment. I haven't worked on their centrifugals (or any centrifugal, for that matter), but their air-cooled screws and RTUs are nice.

Yeah, I feel like they get an unjust bad rap. Some McQuay stuff can be a little high maintenance, but if they're maintained right, they're as good as or better than anything else out there.

I worked for McQuay for a few years. I think some people got a bad taste in their mouth about McQuay equipment when they came out with their first generation of screw compressors that had problems, lots of problems. Other than that, I had no problem with their equipment.

McQuay, some of their stuff is good, some of their stuff makes you just wonder "Why?" They're innovative that's for sure. JMHO. Pretty much like most of the other manufacturers.

They are basically a low bid fill in.I don't think I have ever been on a job where they were spec'd.

There chillers and rooftops are pretty decent, but I remember some water cooled heatpumps with rotary compressors that wouldn't last a year! These were on little 1 to 3 ton wall units that you would find in commercial office buildings to supplement the perimeter. As said before, these would qualify for units that leave you asking why?:D Man I hated having to explain over and over again to building engineers why the compressors wouldn't last.

One other thing about Mcquay is that they are always making changes that reflect problems with some of there units, but as for existing equipment, they take no responsibility.

Oh well, Mcquay gives just as much job security as the others when you think about it.;)

They had huge problems with their old screws - and in my opinion did not do a good job of taking care of it in the field as far as warranty. That alone was a huge setback for product name and customer satisfaction..

The stuff they have now is OK, they biggest problem is a Constant stream of software changes to just about everything, and no common software to deal with it.
So you have to buy lots of different programs(or call them out, and hope they have the right stuff with them). That is a huge pia.And getting the right service info can be an issue.

Centrifugals are very quiet, and when properly maintained , reliable.

Lot of good people work for them, as well as some of the not so good, just like anywhere else.

Personally, the best product they have built recently is the self contained SWP. We started a bunch of these units up and helped McQuay through some of the bugs. There centrifugal line is ok. The vanes are a pain due to the oil load/unload which could be remedied by an external vane motor but this is what makes them unique. I love the overhauls because i will make a ton of money on them. Not many people a trained to do so and if you don't have the service bulletins, you can not properly overhaul one due to the numerous updates.

Nothing on the market can touch the McQuay centrifugals and the AGS line of screws also can not be touched by any other OEM !!

OK maybe I am a little bias !!

hi all! new member to this site. i havent worked too much on McQuay chillers or rtu's, but i have had some experience with their water-source heat pumps. i found that they are pretty basic units, cheaply made. i agree that the compressors dont last very long, as i am in the process of replacing one that has failed just after 4 months. cheaply made doesnt mean that they are difficult to work on. access to mechanical parts and electronics is a breeze, no pun intended.:)

The sales office I work for doesn't have more than a handful. I remember some DX packs that had nice doors on 'em. If they pay the bills, who cares?

captinsano acjournyman is just upset because he does not understand Mcquay equipment! I used to work on many of them but it has been 10 years seeing as how there market share in this state is uhmmm, 5% maybe.
