lots a talk about green guys getting into the trade. I guess it got me thinking back when I was green. I was a SOB i'll tell ya. PIA. I lied half the time just trying to find the right way to do something. And often too proud to listen. But then there was the magic of common sene took over. I started to realize to be mature enough to truly learn my trade, I had better settle down and start listening.

I think many of the personalities I run into on this site, there musta been a little bit of what I described above in a good many of us.

How bout dat profound thought?:D:D

the ones who annoy me are the ones that have maybe a year of experience and talk like they know what they are talking about, most of the time there just repeating what they overheard a journey man guy say to make themselves sound like they know alot, I have more respect for the guy who speaks the truth from the begining and tells me how little he knows versus the guy who speaks very highly of his knowledge and next thing you know this same guy is calling me from all his service calls on how to diagnose simple stuff. I notice this from alot of installers now wanting to be service techs.

I was that kinda guy for a time early on in my career.

You know why?

Cause I fuggen wanted the respect badly. I bet my whole life on this and I was wanting to be good fast. I wanted men to look at me the way they looked at my Dad. Beggin him to come fix it. My first efforts were fruitless of course because I was an idiot like you described.

Then I got my but kicked in a few times and after awhile then finally realized I had some maturing and growing up to do.

Dis me or don't, but that spunk in some guys is about just that. They wanna be good. It's your job to be man enough and wise enough to guide that guy so he doesn't turn out to be a dick.

Some guys you can't save but some guys you can. I was a bad apple at first, and then I figured the right way to be da man is simply truly know it.

I will speak on this one as a new guy, who you guys complain about.

There is a balance that a new guy has to find. when you are there to learn and there to talk.

If you are on your own with a customer and you are the face and mind of your company, you have no choice but to do everything you can to pull you head out of your a$$ and talk like you know what you are doing.

but there is a time and a place for it, I like to think that this has been another lesson for me over the last few years in HVAC.

when I first started no one wanted to work with me either, the more I lissoned and started thinking about not only what they were saying but the dumb things I was saying I learned to shut up and listen.

Yesterday I started working on a steam boiler with a Journeyman. It was great, he walked me through step by stem about traps LWCO and even more stuff that is still sinking in. and twice I found myself saying out loud to my self "Just shut up an listen"

i was lucky enough to work with some great journeyman that took the time and had the patience to teach me this trade. and believe me, i was thick as a brick. i am forever in their debt. if the student didn't learn the teacher didn't teach. if the young guns aren't coming along it is our fault.

unless they are really a dumb a$$ :D
