While everyone is on the subject of heat pump defrost, I had a curious question about the one on my house. When it goes into defrost, I get the normal woosh and then it sits there and does its thing. About a minute and a half later, it makes a high pitch whine kind of like a baloon does when you let air out, it does that for a few seconds, and then for the rest of the defrost cycle, it has a hissing sound and then woosh back to heat mode. I have seen a few other pumps that dont seem to make all those strange noises during defrost, and just want to be sure it is normal. Goodman rtu. thanks.:)

It sounds like the internal relief valve is opening. You should probably call a Tech out to look at it closer.

This is a normal noise for a scroll compressor. Check my post yesterday about the "Moose groan".

It doesnt sound like a compressor noise, it sounds more like something pops open half way through defrost. It does it the same way every time it defrosts. Otherwise the unit works just fine.
