I have a new American Standard 13 SEER,2 1/2 ton, 410A heat pump and matching air handler, installed by certified technician. Two questions, ie: second opinions needed--
1. My heat pump runs nearly all of the time at night, early morning and on cloudy days expecially. It maintains set temperatures, but runs nearly constantly to do so. This happens even when the outside temps are 30 to 40 degrees. It rarely cycles, just seems to run about all the time. Is this operation normal?

2. My heat pump doesnt defrost until it is really loaded with frost/ice. Ice covers the coils, and associated parts outside the coils and runs that way for hours before finally defrosting. Is this normal operation? It seems to me that it should defrost a little sooner or more frequently. Is this adjustable?

Jim

question #1
if system is sized correctly, then no this is not normal..

question #2
the Heritage 13 AS HP has electronic demand defrost.
The situation you describe is not normal.

#2 might explain #1. Ice build-up decreases heat transfer...system must run longer to satisy thermostat setting. Have your pro check the defrost cycle controls.

First time I've seen Niswonger spelled NiGHswonger. Old friend of mine had the Niswonger surname...unusal name as it is, and he caught hell for it when we went through boot camp from the company commander... :D

I didn't think they made Heritage 13 heat pumps that used R-410a (according to www.americanstandardair.com).

The AmStd Heritage 13 HP is available in both R-22 and R-410a...

Thanks Tigerdunes. It says at the bottom there that they made that available in the 4th quarter of 2006, but on the Heritage 13 page it doesn't list the R410a model numbers for the Heritage 13.
