I’m looking for any ideas on how to fix my problem and or get some satisfaction out of Trane.

I installed a Trane (XLi) 14 seer 410 system in my house 4.5yrs ago. I ran the ductwork and had a licensed company do the install and start-up on the units (indoors and out). I’m using a propane furnace as auxiliary heat. Duct system is in the conditioned crawlspace, un-insulated lindab spiral duct. Everyone says my install was top notch as far as houses go.

To date I’ve had to do the following to my unit and its still not 100% right: 1) replace coil on indoor unit. 2) replace compressor. 3) replace fan motor on outdoor unit. 4) Trane gave me a new outdoor unit and had a local Trane installer (who I know) come redo the refrigerant and check-out the system. 5) Replace TXV on coil. 6) NOW have a leak on the back side of the coil. So it will be replaced 7) Compressor locked up yesterday a.m. Replacement coil just came in Monday.

To me, the unit cycles on and off more than it should, and the compressor has never been quiet. There has been talk refrigerant contamination and acid problems, however it would have had to get through my first and second techs for that to be the case, plus it was totally purged when the second outdoor unit was installed. My buddy said that he had 3 compressors go bad on 410 units in one month, and he’s been trying to get a new outdoor unit out of Trane another lady that is on her 3rd compressor and 1 condenser fan motor in 2 years time.

Is anybody having major issues with Trane 410 units? And does anyone have any ideas about my problems. I might be able to give more info if needed.

What size is the heat pump.

What size is your duct. Supply, return.
Number of supplies and returns. Size of branch runs.

Haven't heard of excessive troubles with Trane compressors.

A little more information like Tstat, fossil fuel kit, refrigerant line size, equipment location.

Where are you in Va.?

For the ~90 Trane R-410a systems we have installed in the last 5 years:
0 compressor failures, 1 indoor coil leak, 3 indoor TXV failures, 1 outdoor TXV failure, 2 outdoor fan motor failures(one was an ECM motor killed by a lighting strike that got half the electronics in the house).

Tstat = trane xt500c
fossil fuel kit = Not sure. Its a 4-ton unit.
refrigerant line size = 3/8 & 7/8 I believe, Not 100% sure. 35-40' in length.
equipment location = condenser is outside on west side of house on gravel & prefab pad. Indoor unit is in conditioned crawl space.

I'm in Mechanicsville, VA, close to RIC.

1 main return, low, ~24x30, 25' of18" flex I think. I'll have to verify.
Have to get the supply info. 4x12's at 6" & 8" in floor

Unless it sounds like an airport runway when you stand near that return, there is no way a 25' piece of 18" flex is going to give you anywhere close to the airflow required for a 4 ton heat pump.

Low air flow will cause compressor failures, I'd double the size of your return and verify you have adequate air flow before you try to get Trane to give you anything else.

Low airflow is the root of all evil!

You say it cycles more than you think it should. Did anyone do a load calc to make sure you have the right size unit?

How about a bit of info on the propane furnace, just to chec if it can deliver 1/2 or 2/3 of the recommended air flow..LOL

We need a model # of coil, furnace and condencer and if is possible 7/8 is 7/8?
