The furnace in our house is keeping the house warm, but the pilot clicks a couple times until the main flame starts, but then the falme only stays on for about 1 second and shuts off. This process then repeats itself. Sometimes it happens a dozen times or so and finally the flame kicks in and actually stays lit for a while. Other times I wonder if the on-off cycle is what is actually heating the house. This doesn't seem normal, any ideas.

15 year old furnace.
I wouldn't spend a dime on it.
Buy a new one and upgrade to high efficiency.

How is Twilli going to sell his books if everybody buys a new furnace.

Twilli lastest book is "Keep Replacing Parts"

Forward by Mr Bill. Who says "Its got to be one of them" Also Mr Bill says this will be Twilli best seller to date. A must have for the DIYer

My guess is that you never have had a tech out to service your system even though you've been here asking questions about it since 2005 and have been told more than once that is what you should do. This is not something you can do yourself (obvious to us, less to you) and you seriously need to call a professional to diagnose your issues.

Yes, call someone to repair it, it is broken!

I did have a tech out to ultimately fix it the last time. They replaced a couple significant parts, but age must be catching up on it and it must have something wrong again. It is the right time to have the pre-winter check done anyway. As far as buying new, does anyone have any ideas on how much you can save per year when upgrading to higher efficiency.

It's hard to say how much you'll save without knowing how efficient your present furnace is.
