magnetic tip cleaning

Does anyone have a good way of cleaning out the metal shavings that collect on the magnetic drill extensions. I use my 1/4", 6" long extension in my drill all the time but I've never found a good way to clean it out.

Pocket screwdriver while running the drill slowly to loosen everything up.

Peal some of the butyl rubber off some butyl tape (rollmastic), and press a wad of it into the end of the bit to get the junk out.

Alternative method is to chew some gum until the flavor is gone and the gum is getting stuff, then press it into the end of the bit to get the junk out.

1) putty
2) caulk. Let harden up then pry off. Don't use silicone. Will leave traces that ruing fit of hex heads.

I learned this trick here a while back.

Throw the chuck really hard to the ground, making sure the chuck end hits 1st...

Ok, the method I use, I have some ductmate gasket laying around, wad it into the end and work it around.. pulls it all out.

Next time you let nitro out of a system, take out the vavle cores and let the nitro out full blast :D

Note: better to take out the cores before you put in the nitro

Just use some thum-gum, permagum whatever you call it, or that stikkky cork insulation tape, just shove the chuck into it and viola- all the shavings and bits are gonz!

I have used compressed air to blow out the shavings, nitrogen to blow them out and have been known to throw them against a block of wood to knock out the shavings. Compressed air or nitrogen does the best for me.

If you talk to the shavings and chips, and convince them that they should come out, they will leave the enticing lure of the magnet on their own.

It's a powerful addiction... magnetic fields, that is.

use a good strong magnet and it will suck all that metal shaving right out:eek:

Yeah, but since we already have compressed air or N2 (handy at the time even) it's easier. Unless you have a good reason to keep a powerful magnet on the truck too?

Well, I've never been able to reset a magnet reset duct smoke detector with wishful thinking before. Always have to use a strong magnet for some reason.:o

I used to have around a dozen magnets out of the magnatron's of microwaves. They worked great for all sorts of stuff, but I started carrying them to open solonoid coils instead of buying the specific magnets to do that.

perma gum or mastic tape stuff.... Ive even used ordinary duct tape though it takes bit longer as you have to press it in several times...getting only a few bits at a time.
