Hi,

I have the YJ super evac kit which i love! The only thing that I don't like about the kit is core removal tool. I don't like how it loosens up sometimes. I’m looking for a recommendation for another brand that might be better design.

Thanks

I have the same brand, but I have the handknob model. I don't like the lever ball valve type illustrated below because you could accidently hit it, causing a possible disaster.

I use it also to connect the micron guage -- must have tool for every tech.

I have a hand knob model also....but it bothers me..lol. I could see where it could be an issue with accidentally bumping it though.

I have had both of the C&D core tools and I like the ball valve model so much better. Problem I had was the rubber plunger would wear out and fail a lot faster than the ball valve does. I don't worry about bumping the ball valve, and I don't bump it.

If you have 2 or 3 or 4 of these little time savers, don't forget about the O rings. Part # for the 5 gasket set is CD 5555. Order a dozen or so, very cheap insurance for a evacuation.

Didn't like JB one myself. Unless system pressure was already high where you are changing it, you literally had to yank the damned thing out. Last thing I would like to do on 1/4 discharge line, etc.

This is the reason why I'm reading the posting here. I am about to bid for YJ 18975 core removal tool on Ebay for $44.00 (and I'm sure I will be outbid) and am glad I read Nyefog thread and I've found the answer. Appion MGAVCT Megaflow offers much more than other competitors can not, including YJ, and Ebay has it on "buy it now" for $49.95. Google it for a youtube demonstration. I was hoping the YJ bidding will be within $30-$35 range.

i have lots of these laying in and around my tool box and bag. can never have enough of them lol especially when working on systems with more than one schrader access, i connect to as many as possible (during vacuum) :)

I have the C&D and the Appion.
The Appion has a larger knob and is easier to turn under pressure.
Also tethered aluminum cap on the take off port.
The stem seems to hold the core better but I get hung up on the ball valve more than the C&D did. Overall I like the Appion much better. The JB's look nice with a bigger bore than both but look set up for o-ring gasketed vacuum hoses that I don't have yet.

My vote is for the Appion also. I've got a couple of them that I have had for some time and have had no problems at all with them.

My JB won't hold a Schrader anymore. I now use Appion and works great.

Bought a C&D and leaked within a week.

By handknob model, do you mean the rubber gate valve type? Or is there a ballvalve with a knob instead of a lever? How would you know if it is open?

I had the rubber gate valve type 18 years ago shortly after it was introduced. The ball valve was not available to us then. Had a night job to replace all the schrader valves in the access fittings on a large computer room a/c with rooftop condenser. New cool tool, thought I could do the job faster without recovering the refrigerant from the sytem. Hero mentality influence.
Followed instructions, removed schrader within tool body, dialed the rubber gate valve in tight, it didn't seal properly. I found this out when I took off the end piece that held schrader. Of course with refrig blowing by, the rubber froze allowing more refrig out...all in front of customer. I managed to re-insert schrader to stop problem. That is why gloves and eye protection are mandatory. Job then took 5 hours pumping gas out and changing all schraders.
Tool back to supplier with malice...ball valve is the only way to go as the rubber one never got another chance from me. In retrospect, if the rubber valve was immersed in oil first so the rubber could be lubricated then it might work properly. THAT was not in the directions at the time.

If you are worried about bumping the ball valve, put a couple in series so the chances of bumping both open is almost zero. But if the rubber valve works for you, great! I have a ball valve that is very stiff to turn so it will not bump open easily. Plus, I am werry, werry careful...

Using all three. They all require a little refer oil from time to time, and I keep them clean in a little plastic case. The Appion is the best for my needs.
