I am trying to find any information about chiller room refrigerant monitors and if they are an EPA requirement in a chiller room that also has boilers in them? I have look for about a hour on EPA's web site but cannot find anything concrete. (boy is that web site hard to find anything on!!)
Does anyone know where I can find this information to prove to my supervisor that these are a must in our boiler/chiller rooms??

Refrigerant monitor, exhaust fan and emergency stop buttons at the exits. You do not have to do it unless you are replacing existing equipment. That is what we were told and did when we replaced a chiller. Same deal I understand in the boiler room. Cannot tell you where to find the code. NFPA-99 maybe?

I don't believe it is an EPA requirement as much as an ASHRAE recommended standard. Perhaps you could find it on their website?

I too believe that it in the IMC, but for existing rooms check on OSHA requirements

If Required it would be a local O.S.H. In Maryland that would fall under M.O.S.H. Do a search under this heading, "Guidelines for Refrigerant Leak Monitor Installation"

If it's R134a or one of the other environmentally friendly refrigerants, you need a detection system, unless you want to take the chance of killing people. I tried to find an article on this and the only thing I could come up with that was easy to understand was this. http://yarchive.net/ac/r134a_lethal.html

Old rooms are Grandfathered....Your local inspections department should not be allowing anyone to install the new chillers without upgrading the room with exhaust fans wired to cycle on with an alarm from the monitor. Duct should extent to almost the floor level, etc..Read it close... we typically have to install a warning light, and locate self contained breathing devices at the entrance to the room.

I think the breathing device got nixed. I guess it was like scuba diving without proper training. If the room is contaminated, don't go in.

Jogged my memory...the breathing devices were on a job over 5 years ago...a recent customer requested them and provided their emergency response team with training.

Just took a "training class" on the scba breathing apparatus, very enlightening  We also ended up bringing the room up to code, wired in two ex fans, & a strobe outside the room to the refigerant monitor, in stages. I doubt anybody will remember the training, hopefully the ex. fans won't fail.
