I currently work as a start up tech for a fairly large hvac company. I have expressed interest in moving into the service dept. I was told get epa( which i already have) Certificate from tech school ( again already have done). But still no move, they bring in newbies all the time. Well here is my question. I have interviewed with a company as a tech rep. the only thing it is for walk ins and other types of refrigeration. It sounds very good with the vacation days and benies. Just wondering if anyone has any advice, it would be appreciated.

With some companies, it's VERY difficult to make any kind of lateral move. If you work proficiently as a start up tech, why would they want to move you into another dept. where you (read: they) may not be as successful? Many (not all) owners and decision makers are rather disillusioned and have a "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" attitude.

The very same thing happened to me at a company I used to work for. I had done everything from run construction crews, to controls and piping, startup and checkout, and on a few occasions, bailed their service dept. out after hours. I grew weary of the construction side of things, but knew of an opening in the service dept. I talked to the manager, and he more or less told me that he wanted another tech, but he wanted me to chase his service guys around doing ductwork for them on equipment replacements, etc.

In other words, even though I had proven my value in almost every technical facet of the business they were in, I was still pigeonholed and my opportunities were limited.

I would have to agree on here sometimes its hard moving from one dept to another internally of a company. I am currently in the service dept of a company with strong intrest in the controlls dept and can foresee with the shortage of good techs in my area it will be a cold day in hell before I can make the transition over to the controlls dept..... With that said there is always more than one way to skin a cat so here's some food for thought...

If you want to make a move from start ups to service is it possible to befriend say a service manager and discuss it with him and then possibly quit the company on good terms and be rehired in as service.... This is of course assuming that department managers have controll over who they hire or who they interview. I guess just be creative is what i'm getting at here.

Persistence pays.
