Does anyone here work for a public school system, if so what are your opinions about it.
I have been made an offer to work for a large city school system , the pay is good and benns are good, but it all just sounds to good to be ture.
I was told that the systems are everything from small window units up to 100 ton chillers, which is a buffet of differant type of systems. The offer sounds great and I more than likly will take it.
I was just looking for some in put from anyone who might work for a school system now, any thoughts or opinions ?

I work for a university and its pretty good work. I know a whole bunch of guys that work or have retired from Detroit public schools. They (the Schools) have major money problems now but the guys still get paid a bit more than us. The work is so good that many guys work 2 full time jobs, because they are not exhausted after work. I'd have to say that the majority of guys work there until retirement, rather than leave after a few years. That should say something. For the record, I am only familiar with the Detroit Public Schools. Good luck to you.

I work for a community college and although the pay is not as good as I could make at a service company, I'm not pushed to be in a hurry constantly. I don't know any service techs that can install a new compressor and then keep going back to watch it for 3 weeks between all the other jobs like I can.
If we have to call a service company in to fix something you can bet it's a screwed up mess.
I basically get to do pm's when I decide to, and that's normally between the big jobs. The jumble of different types of equipment on campus has broadened my experience probably as much as if I'd been running calls for a service company except for the lack of heat pumps, we don't have any of those. I don't have to do equipment replacements either, that stuff is bid out, so I just watch and learn.
If the pay suits you then that's probably a good job.
