How many of you are allowed to wear shorts to work when it gets this hot out? We get to wear them if we work on the weekends, but not through the week. I think once it gets above 90° you should be able to wear nice khaki shorts instead of those dark colored uniform pants that are so hot to wear. Whats your guy's opinions?

I'll keep the Carhartt logger dungarees thank you.;)

Rather sweat then tear/burn the hell out of my legs.......besides, I'd blind everyone in a 3 block radius with the reflective glare from my "albino white" legs.:D

Never liked wearing shorts to work. To many ways to get injured, scraped cut, etc. Try climbing on a hot rooftop to change a CFM after the suns been beating on it for hours in shorts, it aint no fun. Our company policy is not shorts to boot.

If you're gonna wear shorts, please dont' wear them with your pink crocs!:D I just came off a tour boat. A guy was wearing them. At least they were blue and matched his shorts.

Some installers wore them even when they were banned. Now the boss will provide 3 in uniform colors but they have to be washed by the wearer. Only a couple of installers wear them.

Same here, to much opportunity for injury, and my legs are so white, the glare would pose an aviation hazard. I do work within a few miles of DFW airport afterall. :D

I don't think I have even owned shorts for more than 5 years.
I don't go shirtless in the sun either, lol.
Since I got fat, I stay covered up out of courtesy to humankind, I wish more fat people would show the same courtesy.

to much time crawling around in attics and crawlspaces or kneeling down on a roof.

i save the shorts for when i'm not working.

I have company issued shorts. I wear them all summer. I carry a pair of pants in the van for the commercial jobs that require them. I am very careful and only kneel on soft stuff or wear knee pads. Have not had a leg injury from wearing shorts, over 11 years doing this now. I did have a sunburn on my inner thighs when I was cutting some steel with stick welder, ouch. I was at home though.

We are in Vermont so if it gets above 70 our company employees start wearing short. I'm the boss and I wear them even on sales calls. I guess we are just laid back up here.

When asked about the company policy on wearing shorts I said, " Just make sure that they ain't those short shorts like that guy on Reno 911." ;)

I use to wear shorts when it was real hot . It was fine doing most bids and residental service calls on weekends being that was overtime and they should be dam glad I showed up on the weekend.

I havnt worn shorts for years tho being in all reality ..... its not practical. I found myself spending too much time trying to stay clean. Too easy getting burned , cut, or tryin to go thru insullation or a dirty crawl space.

No getting around shorts are great in some cases but more then not , I would rather be in Levis

I worked for ONE guy that let us were shorts, Summer of '01. It was great, till some jerk wad came to work wearing his gym shorts from 1978 that were about 3 sizes too small and while taking lunch and sunning himself on the lawn of the account (a local school no less), generated a call to the office (phones were answered by the bosses wife) from some little old lady, because his man junk was fully exposed to the entire world.

Shorts were banned the next morning and we had polyester uniforms with long sleeve shirts within two weeks. It's amazing that bonehead didn't have an "accident" before he got laid off in November.

Personally, I like the protection offered by long pants, but it sure was nice to see how the other half lives for a season.

When it hits 60-65 degrees I start wearing shorts. RTU's, attics, crawlspaces or bushes. Doesn't matter. I'd wear sandles if I could. I look like Cliff Claven with white sweatsocks and black sport loafers. Change my shirts if I sweat through, but sometimes shorts look as if I had an accident:rolleyes:

We can wear them if we want, some of the install team wears them when it is real hot. Most wear pants though, I think for safety. I choose not to wear shorts because I have tattoos on both legs and don't want a HO judging me because of them. Believe me I am the last one to care who judges me and outside of work if you want to say something about my tat's by all means bring it, but when it may affect my income because my customers are sometimes yuppy rich types then I'll pass on the shorts.

When I was working in the field I put on shorts as soon as the temps hit 70 and wore them until the temps dropped below 50. I always wore white knee high support socks and most times steel toed low cut shoes. I hate having pants clinging to my legs when I am working.

That was my argument. How many of you have said "Man if I didnt have these thick pants on I might have cut my leg or got burnt."

After seven years of asking the boss we were finally able to wear shorts, but only when its going to be above 90°. I keep a pair of pants in the van and I also have a pair of coveralls. As far as attics go most around here a cellulose and it doesnt make me itch. I would much rather be in a hot attic with shorts than those stupid uniform pants.

My doctor doesn't wear a tie or white coat. I guess were you live has an effect on how you dress. We had an old WW2 VET that was a member of RSES with me. He would wear a dress shirt and tie when he went on service calls back in the 60's.

When I was a kid in the 50's attentants in the gas stations were required to wear uniforms with military type caps and leather bow ties.

For my daytime, on the clock service calls, I wear "the uniform" (Dickies). I charge top dollar and want to look like a pro. Perception is 9/10 of reality.

After hours, for close friends, and for customers I would rather piss off, whatever I'm wearing is what they get. I have gone to a few service calls in shorts and flip flops after hours. For those PITA customers, there is no better way to piss em off than to arrive in a personal vehicle looking like a slob, and charge top dollar for the job. You know the type job I am talking about... a late night weekend call to come thaw out the evaporator because they haven't changed the filter all year.

First off, I'm strictly commercial/industrial except for 2 condos (400 units) I have to tear magicpaks out of sideways downtown. Shorts would not be a good idea for me to work in.

Yes, you can look professional in shorts given the right circumstance and as you guessed James, I don't live there. Sounds like a good thing since everyone judges you by what you wear:rolleyes: Gestapo, yeah, right. I wear what I'm comfortable with, I'm the O/O. I see shorts as a middle ground. Also, the tattered Ts and ripped jeans on service guys I see are a pile of crap, as I'm guessing you would agree.

I wear shorts nearly 365 days a year & have done so for more than 20 years.
White legs? Not here, not ever.
I carry pants for crawls.
As for injuries, my legs aren't cut up but my hands look like I was in a bar fight. I don't ever recall cutting or injuring my legs. Hands & arms are another story.
I'm not talking short-shorts. I'm talking cargo shorts to the knee. Those, with company polo shirt & work boots & I'm ready to make money.
Professional look? They just want their a/c working. We look professional even if our knees are showing. Funny- I don't ever reacll a customer telling me- "You know, we've been without a/c for 2 days now. But I think I'll wait a few more days, call out someone else who will have black pants, a white long sleeve shirt & "Smells Good"." :p

Chicken legs?

I think not, I hit the gym on a regular basis and every Sunday I have off work I spend at the shore so I'm neither skinny nor pasty white.

I do however believe that when sweating copper lines, running a grinder, flame cutting steel or kneeling on a black rubber roof on a 100* day in the afternoon sun, you would be well advised to wear a pair of workpants instead of shorts.

The law of the jungle and nature does not take into an account the employer and cultural guide lines some stuffed shirt has imposed upon the work force . There is a reason the boys pull away from the body in the summer and draw up in the winter. This is the real first law of thermodynamics. Take care of the boys and they will take care of you.
