I've been talking to a company who was all set to hire me. I told them that I have a felony for marijuana from 3 years ago and they were still interested in me. I went through a couple interviews, took and passed a drug test, and was told that they had to wait to see what corporate said about the background check. Well, my would-be manager called and told me that corporate wouldn't okay me and that 3 years isn't quite long enough. He said that he and his boss went back and forth with HR but they wouldn't budge. He was very cool about it and I held my cool and thanked him but this isn't the first time I've been denied a job in this industry due to my background.
Fact is, I made a stupid mistake. All *****ing and moaning aside, is there anything I can do to get over this hurdle? Do any of you guys have a checkered past? How did you get around it?

i can understand there side but totally bs, i try to get a lawyer or whoever to see if they could clear the criminal check. not sure how long it stays or even if it gets dropped. good luck. guess everyone does mistakes and should not be paying for it for the rest of there lives unless they did not learn that is.

I had an ex-friend ( bad drug habit, stole from everyone). Had to tell him I like you, hopefully no hard feelings, but until you change your ways I can't risk being associated with you. Over 83 felony counts & still gets hired. Not a very good technician either! How does he do it? Simple.
That part on the application where it asks if you have ever been convicted of a felony- his reply- NO! He flat out lies about his past encounters with law enforcement. A couple of companies actually did back-ground checks and those are the ones who did not hire him. The rest that didn't bother but said they did- hired him.

i got some serious chit on my record form 33 years ago and it still come sup on backround checks,, even a pardon won't remove it it will just say you have been pardon from it and it is still on your record but I haven't had any problems getting jobs just be straight up .. what I do is mark the question yes and don't put what for on my application, will talk about it in an interview,, IMHO if the company don't want to hire you for a past with refer than f$$k them

Same here Papa. Same time frame also and I have no problems except that people are do look down on you and talk behind your back I have come to learn.
Some people think they are better than you because of it. But I say F**K them.
I over came quite a bit to be where I am today. And I am very grateful for what I have and the people who have helped me years ago.
I don’t lie and sometimes that can be a problem for me.
In a different way it gets me in trouble because I have straight up told people they have a piece of crap and they got beat by the company that hacked in their system.:D

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm trying to look at it as a numbers game and that eventually, if I keep putting out applications, I will find someone who doesn't care about me having grown some weed. I guess that's the answer though: keep plugging away until I find someone who isn't uptight or has some bs 'corporate policy' that enables them to throw my resume in the trash.
On the upside, the guys I spoke with at the company were very cool about it. I even tracked down their corporate number and left a message for HR about my situation and someone called me back. She told me that she checked with a couple of her managers but it's against company policy. I was very impressed and surprised that she took the time to call me back. It still kind of feels like their smiling in my face while twisting a knife in my side.
