Pugs dont care who pays for the optional excursion.

Army's 'Debt Of Service' Leaves Vets Perplexed
Unbelievably, Soldiers Must Pay For Damaged Equipment

(CBS) NEW YORK Servicemen and women who made huge sacrifices fighting in the war and now paying yet another price, even after coming home.

One soldier in particular is currently battling against a new "debt of service."

Brian Rodriguez is a fighter, an honorably discharged soldier who'd been deployed in Iraq.

"I was a combat engineer," Rodriguez said. "We deal with land mines, explosives."

He fought for his nation, only to return to his homeland and wage a fresh battle.

Former Army Specialist Rodriguez started getting bills for $700 for lost or damaged government property this summer. Although he was discharged some four years ago, bills recently arrived demanding payment, but giving no details on what or why -- nor do they offer a way to dispute the charges.

"For doing my job you're going to bill me?" Rodriguez said.

And he's not alone. A 2006 government report found more than 1,000 soldiers being billed a total of $1.5 million. And while fighting overseas put their lives on the line, this battle on paper could cost them their future by ruining their credit. Rodriguez will be reported to credit agencies next month.

"It makes a terrible point about the nature of military service today," citizen soldier Tod Ensign said.

Ensign is a veteran's advocate. He says this is all part of the military’s push to be run more like a business.

"They'll just pound him and call him, call his employers, and make his life as miserable as they can until he pays up," Ensign said.

Testimony before Congress detailed in a report found that "although unit commanders and finance offices are authorized to write off debts for lost and damaged equipment ... they have not always done so."

"It happens too often and it's just disgraceful," Sen. Charles Schumer said. "Here are people who are risking their lives for us and they come home and they're being treated as if they're criminals instead of heroes."

Because it's been four years since he left the Middle East, Rodriguez's battalion was dissolved and his commanders are long gone. And despite repeated requests, the Army never could tell us what piece of equipment Rodriguez was billed for, nor would they get rid of the debt.

"I did my time, I served my country and this is the thanks I get," Rodriguez said.

This is not uncommon Tinkerbell.
The Goverment charges you for EVERYTHING when your in the service.
when you first get to boot, you have no PAY, why? because that goes towards are your Utilities, Formal wear, equipment ETC.

If you lose or destroy this stuff, expect a bill!

when you discharge expect to give it all back or pay a bill.
it's been that way for decades!

Well hell tin, at 10 billion a week, Bush has to pay for his optional excursion somehow.

He doesn't want his wealthy buddies to pay for the war, so he puts it on the back of those actually fighting the war.

Um, whats his bill for?

when he Discharged, the provided him with an Itemized list more than likly.
he turned in what he had at the time. things happen, sometimes personel
come back from being forward deployed with all kinds of "Goodies"
and they sit in the attic for years. well sometimes the D.O.D does their homework and wants their stuff back! so guys never hear another word from the D.O.D and it's a dead issue.

now personally, I agree with this soldier! He did his time, he should not be billed especially 4years after being discharged.
but one does not Argue with the D.O.D, just like the IRS
they will F*%CK your life up if they have too!

also too, he was a combat engineer!!
How much would you like to bet he has a few goodies he hung on too after he discharged?

Time delay fuses, detonater switches, wiring diagrams,
waterproof fuses ETC ETC ETC!!:D

you make friends with 3 kinds of people when your in the Infantry:
Combat Engineers, Medics/Corpsmen & Sea Bee's!

guarenteed, at some point in time, you will need something they can provide!

Then why doesnt the military show him the proof? Probably charge him for the extra paper and ink.

The Air Force is not doing this. In combat if you lose it it is lost.
This is sad for sure let them try to charge one of mine and I'd raise hell. We wrote off things all the time. Soldiers asked us for things all the time so they won't be charged.

The problem here is that the democrats think the military works like the welfare system. Notice two of them that never served on this thread have the most to say with out both sides of the story.

I am sure the practice of charging for lost or abused equipment only happened after GW was elected....LOL

Yeah, any other time people like Schumer, Tinkerbell and Socialist Geer would be worried about the comfort of Al Queda's at Gitmo and making sure they are not made to feel uncomfy at airports
