we have recently relocated our AC units. I have a 3.5 ton Aire Flo system, my ac seems to run fine, once it cools down in the house and the ac unit shuts off it automatically goes into a open winding mode. My unit will have to sit for approximately 15 mins before i can turn it back on and notice the compresser working. Otherwise the fan motor will turn on but the compressor will not turn on. Does anyone know why this would happen or what the problem could be.

Compressor protection
Most are around 5 min. It can usually be tweaked at the stat, but some are in the condensing unit itself.
Call you service provider and have it changed if you like.

The possibilities are to numerous for anyone on a website to give solid info without being there. Do yourself a favor and call your service provider to properly diagnose the problem.

I was also going to ask if it did this before you moved it , or if you got a new thermostat?

I know it is not the time delay, that is set at five min....after it runs and the compressor shuts off it automatically goes to open windings and that is where I am stuck at.

call service co. it sounds like thermal overload

Ask your tech (Gary) if it would be better to have the person who relocated it(as long as it wasn't him)to take a look at it:)

your pressures must stablize before unit (compressor) will run. if you have a expansion valve evap coil then it may take 15 min.

im still fairly new in the business but ill throw a couple thoughts.
if the outside fan is running, im guessing it isnt the thermostat's delay because nothing should be running while its in delay (or at least to my knowledge)
sounds like some kind of safety feature in the board at the unit. never seen or worked on one of those so im not sure what it has. im guessing since you only noticed it happening after it got relocated, this never happened before. soooo im thinking someone possibly changed a setting intentionally? or accidently? also, if its approx. 15 mins everytime, it sounds like its a timer of some kind and not due to overheating? not trying to sound like i know it all or anything, this is just my way of trying to learn ;)
like most of these guys say, getting them back out there is your best bet. let us know what happens :D

I have found that if your unit is slightly low on juice then it cant cool itself down. You see when the system is running the cold refrigerant is returned thru the compresser, thus keeping it cool, but if you are runnig a little low then you are not going to cool the compresser down and when the system shuts down, the heat is realy on inside the compresser ,and you are tripping the thermal switch. Id bet a wooden nickel that if given enough juice you will see this problem go away.
An easy self check is to see what temps you have at the 3/4 line returning to the compresser. it should be cold during normal operation.Good luck

keep trying to run the unit like this will kill the compressor. its not suppose to open its windings. it does this as a saftey. why did you move the unit. did you pull a vacum?

Gary did not relocate my unit, however if he would have I am sure we would not have this problem due to his experience.

Bingo.Thermo overload.I would call for service. If they can't fix the problem then call someone else that can.
