View Full Version : Why does our AC keep freezing up?

We added on a home office last year, bought a larger furnace, removed our swamp cooler, and had central air installed. Right now, it is 78 deg in the house and 89 degrees outside. The air conditioner is frozen up, so I've turned it off. This happens all of the time. What should I do?

One of two things causes the indoor coil of a cooling system to freeze up;

Low air flow across the coil.

Low amount of refrigerant entering the coil.

There are many reasons why either of these conditions could occur.

The only HO serviceable possibility is if the air filter is too restrictive from being dirty or being "too efficient". Alleged "high quality" 1" filters are usually very restrictive.

If u are able to make sure your return air duct is not crushed that will cause an air flow problem

Other than the filter,
Call Your installers an exercise your warranty. :)

Thanks everyone!

We replaced our (very dirty) filter. Then we had the salesman/installer come to our house first thing this morning. He adjusted the refrigerant level. LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you RoBo Teq for your help!!

I'm not sure if I'm using the correct wording, but here goes:

Our AC was installed in February, and our installer never came back the following summer to check the coolant. When he used the gauges on Saturday, the coolant needed to be adjusted.

So I'm assuming that we don't necessarily have a leak - correct?

Thanks.

hopefully not. and if you do you will know. they will have to add more next time. hopefully this is not the case thou. if it is the case hopefully it is found before the warranty expires.

if its a maytag im gonna say it is leaking. Im sure the installing company took care of this leak. its a rather common leak on the maytag. I know cause my company has been putting in maytags for 2 years now. Every system they make for whatever reason has this leak thou. And its a very easy fix i just wish maytag would fix there valves.

It's not just Maytag with this issue. Since the leaking component is a vendored item, every manufacturer using that component is prone to having the same issues.

thats good to know so why don't they do something about this. i understand 410 is greater pressure but this is getting out of control. a new unit should not require its valves leak locked. also cranked really tight. only had this problem with 22 valves if someone cooked it.

Lennox XC15 are also having this problem, as far as we can tell it is the suction side valve that is leaking. Stupid valve.
